I have used shimano and crank brothers egg beaters.

Egg beaters are easier to clip in and out of, and offer a firmer hold on the cleats. I have broken several egg beater pedals, normally by snapping the axle. I do not use these very much anymore due to this problem; I know others who have had a similar experience. The cleats also wear quickly.

Shimano do not offer as good mud performance, shimanos can be blinded. The cheaper shimanos do not in my opinion offer very good performance at all, and I would recommend that you only get the mid - high end versions of the shimano pedals. Shimano pedals do not give a firm grip like egg beaters, so when pedaling there is always some play between the cleat and the shoe so they don't feel as nice.

the time pedals ive seen on the net look as tho they only engage on 1 side is that correct or are they dual sided entry

I'm quite happy with my budget shimano SPuDs. Secure, firm feel, stable platform and although the mud clearance isn't great you can still clip in when they are clogged

Not when they are properly clogged. Snow stops them straight away, but is an infrequent problem. The main issue is when leaves and other foliage gets churned up with the mud to make that horrible crud thats as sticky as expanding foam. I use Egg Beaters for October / November when this is an issue, and after its snowed then use my Shimano DX's when the nice weather reappears. I reackon I might have managed to grind the surface of the pedal away a bit and thats giving the loose feel, its that Yorkshire grit again.

If you do get some eggbeaters, or other CB, keep on top of those bearings and get yourself a grease gun.

The only play in my low end Shimanos is lateral and to be honest I heard that was a good thing as it can knacker your knees up otherwise. I have never had any problems with mine but then I have never tried any of the others either.

I love my time ones they are really easy to get in and out of. The other brill thing is that they never clog up with mud. One thing that is brill when you are MTBing [:D]
