New Shifters / Rear mech
I am probably going to change my brakes in the very near future, unfortunately they are Dual Control so will need to change the shifters aswell.
I was thinking about SRAM X9 shifters/rear mech instead of my current XT DC although Merlin are doing a pretty good deal on SRAM X0 shifters and rear mech (œ50 more than X9)
Has anyone here used both, thoughts on both kinds and is it worth paying the extra?
I guess one draw back to getting XO is that it costs a fortune to replace if I knacker the rear mech.

sram rear mechs are too long, and seem to get caught in the spokes often.... for the last 5 years I have run LX shifters on most of my bikes (similar weight to older xtr) with a shimano road rear mech, Ultegra is the best value only weighs 217g for the short cage (about same length as mtb med cage) and costs œ39.99. Dura ace is even lighter at 180g but costs œ59.99 (CRC). Bear in mind a fair few downhillers/xc racers use road rear mechs (Steve Peat used to use Dura Ace rear mech and cassette!) so they can deal with mtb use easily.

hi have the new shimano xtr rear mech RD-M971 XTR (with dura ace cassette 11-28) it rules!! on a 9-speed.
soooooo smooth !! fast and well worth the cash! very light too. i bought the medium cage, think its labeled short cage on the site, few months back now.
but with a mtb 11 or 12-32t you'd need a long cage.
i also tryed a dura ace thats pretty light and slick too.
im very happy with my xtr.
hope this helps.

I recently changed to XO from XTR.
I wouldn't say one was better that the other. Swings and roundabouts.
I had a long term shot of a bike with X9. I thought it performed at roughly the same level as X0, just minus the bling. If bling bothered you then go for the X0, if not, go for X9 and throw the extra œ50 you would have spent on something nice!Roadie

If Sram stuff shifts faster and easier for you, what reasons do you have for preferring Shimano?

I'm more than happy with my new XT shifters and mechs. Shifting is smooth and quick.
