I really would like a specialized stumpy HT but cant afford it. My budget is œ700. What bike is as close to a stumpy as possible as I borrowed a mates for the Dog in Cannock last week and loved it,. Fell off teice though, once in the car park! Doh

If you like the Spesh, why not go for a cheaper model like the Rockhopper?<font color="blue">Roadie</font id="blue">

Or take a look at a Merlin. They have a few different frames and specs and are regarded as excellent value for money.

I tried the rockhopper and it doesn't have the feel of the stumpy although it is on my list, the worst thing I could have done is ride a œ1200 bike with a œ700 budget!

What feel are you looking for? Was the rockhopper too heavy? was the stumpy more stretched out feeling? Some of these attributes you may be able to influence by changing low cost items such as the stem and handlebars. If its weight that was the problem then hards to fix as more money tends to reduce weight. As steako says Merlin offer great value and may be able to give the feel of a stumpjumper HT.
Another bike to look at if you like fast feeling bikes is a Cannondale. They are not necessarily as well specced as others, however they have lovely frames and give a fast and light feel to their ride http://www.westbrookcycles.co.uk/acatal ... Bikes.html

I'm surprised the Rockhopper and Stumpjumper felt so different. Both have very similar M4 frames with almost identical geometry.
If you like the stretched out racy feel of the Stumpy you may want to consider the Scott Scale 50, the Trek 6500 or the Gary Fisher Tassajara
