Usual Problem?

I've just measured my chain and the stretch is pretty much exactly 1/16th inch over 12 links. So, I fitted a new chain (after splitting it to size), but it now skips horrendously on the 4th largest sprocket.
The front chainrings were new about 200km ago.
Is it usual for the cassette to be so damaged when the chain has JUST stretched 1/16th " ? Can I buy just a replacement 20t sprocket?

Is it indexed correctly, that will cause it to skip. Do you use forth largest a lot? If you mainly use this gear when riding on the flat for instance you may have excessive wear on it. It may also get excessive wear if your chainline is out.

I'm pretty sure the indexing is fine, since it shifts perfectly between the sprockets. I do probably use 3/4/5 quite a lot, but not would have thought I used the 5th sprocket more than 4th...

Could be a worn sprocket: check it for bent teeth too. Unfortunately, unless you cassette can be split, you cannot get a new sprocket. Most cant easily, and are riveted together.

Hmm. have just taken a look and the teeth look ever so slightly narrower than the others, and the drive side of each tooth has be pressed flat.
It's not worth getting anything other than Deore really is it?

Spoil yaself! Everyone will see the difference (except me, I can't see the difference once they're on the bike)

Nah, I've just splashed œ40 on tyres, and since I earn zilch, I just can't afford to bling it all up.
Saying that, my bike does now weigh 28.5 lbs ! Woo!

Still got to weigh mine. Think it's lost at least 4 lbs since I got it, but will try to weigh it tomorrow

Right, sorted.
Since a) I only replaced my chainrings not long ago, and b) my jockey wheels are knackered, I've decided to put the old chain, cassette and rings on and just leave them to rot (well, until it starts to skip again). Then, I'll put the shiny new chain on, along with the 200km-used chainrings, and the Deore cassette which I wont on 'bay last night for œ12 delivered.
Any flaw in the plan?
