New brakes
I have decided that I am a bit fed up with my XT brakes not working as they should (or at least as well as I think they should). I have had them bled and checked the rotors / pads and all seems fine but performance is a bit spongy....so new brakes
I am thinking it is between the new Hope M4 with braided hoses and floating rotor (œ240 185mm pair) or the Avid Juicy Carbon (œ220 185mm Pair). I have used the Hope brakes before and think they are excellent but that was a few years ago, I have no experience of the Avids.
If anyone has used the Juicy Carbons can you let me know the plus and neg points please, also if anyone has used the new Hope M4s setup feedback on them would be great aswell.
Thanks
Dave

Dave the hopes beat the avids [;)] pop down and try mine [:P] hehehe
i personally felt the avid's didn;t have the same stopping power and were less modulated..

The Avids are great brakes when set-up, but there are downsides. The pads are a nightmare to change, takes ages to get them sut-up nicely after a pad change whereas my hayes were a doddle to change the pads on. They also vibrate a bit when used heavily. Never used Hope, but i think quality control is an issue so if you get a bad set then.....
Have you thought of formula Oro, these seem to get good reviews and i've not heard anything negative about them, whereas i've heard downsides of mosts other brakes. I also really liked the magura martas on a mates new Enduro SL, I always thought these were flimsy lightweight brakes, but they felt very powerful and well modulated on the Enduro, i'd be considering these if I was replacing my Juicies.

Avids were all the rage last year, but Formulas and Hope are in for '07.
There is a mini brake review in this months MBR. I'll let you have a look over the weekend.

My experiances.
Hope were great untill the Mono range then they sucked. dont know about the new ones.
Avid great no probs easy to set up and pad changes are simple. the brakes can be a bit noisy when wet.
(this covers the juicy 5/7's and the codes).
Oros, great as good as avids if not better (well they did design the juicy 5/7's) only problem i have had is on the rear brake the lever became very stiff on the return. nothing a strip down and bleed could noy cure.
go an try as many brakes as you can before buying. they are all OK some seem to be better due more to the Owner than the brake.

iv got 2 sets of m4's with braided hoses, im a big lad and they have never failed me yet! would take some convincing to get me to swap them. and most importantly they are british!0

i have the old hope mini's,they squeel that loud when wet it is embarassing,is this still not a problem on the newer ones, and whilst im on it are m4's a bit overkill for xc?

I dont think so but I dont just do XC although any dh at the moment is very easy/basic stuff.
A few of the people I go out with do a lot of the DH tracks at Innerleithen and similar and I have been thinking about going along and having some extra "fun"...while hopefully not killing myself.
To others - I hadnt thought about the Formula Oro but someone else mentioned them to me the other day, he highly rates them...hmm what to do.
I think the Juicy's might be out, to many things said against them here and in previous posts. CaptConcussion has the new Hopes and as I am sharing the drive to Kirroughtree with him at the weekend I should be able to get loads of info from him[:)]
Thanks for everyones feedback - appreciated.

the old (MINI) ones had problems with rotors and squeaking, but the new ones are good. The new M4's are great and the mk2 are very good.
they beat my old Deore 525/535 hands down..

LOL @ the horses
Yeah, your driving was great, especially when you decided to watch things off the road (wedding cars and other girlie stuff) and not bother about the cars stopping in front of you[:0]
