hey guys
I put new cables on the front derailleur yesterday and when i'd finished, shifting the thing took a lot of effort and he cable pulled really tight, so tight you could twang it (bout D#!)
they re SRAM X.7 with an X-gen derailleur, bout 18 months old
It has slackend slightly i think, but its still pulled completly taught unlike the rear derailleur.
I don't think theres any problem with the derailleur itself, but i did have to open the shifters cos for the life of me i couldn't get the cable through without, Put it back together and when the cable is loose it works fine, also the little rubber bung on the non driveside arm of the the derailleur has come out?!
Any ideas, it shifts finre but i can'y believe its supposed to be this tight
Insert random comment here.....

Sounds like a full set up is required as I guess the stops are out of adj.
Loosen off the cable on the pinch bolt. Drop the chain onto the granny ring (fr)and big cog (at the back)and adjust the mech stop on the fr mech (the one marked with a tint "L")til it just touches the inner face of the chain, then back it off about half a turn.
Wind in the barrel adjuster at the left shifter and then pull the cable hand tight and pinch it up at the mech.
The mech should shift through to the big front ring now.
Shift the chain to the smallest rear cog and then adjust the front outer mech stop ("H") till it just touches the outer chain face, then back off half a turn.
The bung thats missing wont effect the shifters operation.
That should correct it.
If not I suggest a visit to the LBS as there are a few other things which could be causing the problem.

What gauge of cables are you running? They may simply be a bit heavy. I would have thought that something light would be ideal, such as Ernie Ball Slinkys or even Super Slinkys.
FWIW I tend to tune my cables to C.
