I have have just seen my Doctor who has confirmed that I have Conjunctivitis. [xx(]

It started yesterday whilst cooking my dinner (I thought it was the onions to begin with). Not had much sleep because it hurts to close my eyes (got that awful feeling that I have something stuck in my eye), it's constantly streaming and stinging like a biatch! [:(]

Anyway I have some questions that I forgot to ask my Doctor and if anyone can help I will be very grateful.

1. Would it do any harm putting eye drops in both eyes even though only my left eye is infected? I know that it is incredibly contagious and I don't want this to drag out any longer than it has to.

2. I am booked onto an organised ride tomorrow. It's 5 hour off roader from 10 am. Am I daft for even thinking I might be well enough and cancel or should I see how I get on?

3. I was supposed to be going to a mates party tomorrow evening. Again, shall I just cancel or see how I get on? Also, I take it alcohol is always going to hinder recovery from an illness and should be avoided right??

It always bloody happens when I got loads on!

1) Yes, probabnly a good idea as it is v. infectious and has a habit of spreading from one eye to t'other (as you mucky buggers can't stop pockling about with things ;-) )

2 & 3) See how it goes. make sure you wear specs on the ride to stop further irritation. A lot of conjunctivitis is chemically rather than bacteriologically mediated so it may heal up fairly quickly.

What drops did he give you?? (just out of interest). You could also buy some of the false tears eye drop things - can't remember the name off ahnd but a decent pharmacist will. They should make things more comfortable.....

What steve said basicaly. The thing about eye drops is its ok to put them in both if you don't touch your eye with the nipple of the bottle... Either eye!

She [;)] just told me to get some over the counter drops (Optrex Infected Eye Drops). She said to take one drop either every hour or every 2 hours (the bottle says every two so I have been following that). What are the false tears that you mention? How do they work?

Oh and will see how I get on then with regards to the ride etc. I have some shimano wrap around glasses that I have actually been wearing today because the light is killing my eye [:(]

Viscotears are the ones they use where I work. Basically they act as extra lubricant for your eyes.

Just out of interest what job do you do, as conjunctivitis is not typically that painful. I was thinking it could be something work related....

I work in Electronics. Can you get Solder eye?? [;)]

TBH I think it may be the incessant rubbing of my eyes with having hayfever that may have caused it. Strange that I only have it in one eye though. Then again, I am not a Doctor so what would I know.

i've had conjunctivitis a good few times. it's never stopped me from doing anything (except looking nice), i've just carried on as usual and it clears up quickly with the right treatment. drops in both eyes, and make sure you use a different face towel to everyone else, and even then dont touch it to your eyes. ideally use disposable towels so you don't re-infect yourself (or anyone else).

I'm currently in about the 4th month of this.....

Doctors and consultants have different ideas.

First GP says, 'dont know, lets sort out seeing a consultant'

Second GP says 'it can't be allergic conjunctivitis. Why wouldn't it affect both eyes" and prescribes steroidal drops called pred forte. Which calmed down the redness etc a lot, but the running remained

Consultant says its allergic and gives antihistamine drops. Today my eyes like niagara.

Crikey, thats awful!

Does it hurt? Mine is agony.

I assumed that allergic conjunctivitis is the usual Hayfever itchy eyes.

Have you tried rubbing each eye with pepparami? The spicy one is probably better.

I had this a month ago not pleasant, i had a cold and some how ended up with conjunctivitis, was advised not to wear my contact lenses for a month and i had some cream, was a bugger to get in the eye!! i thought it was drops so no probs but no cream, have you tried getting cream in your eye??!!! it just gets every where!! one bonus is i had a week of work as its on the list of illnesses i cant attend work with!

Thats crazy! How can you put cream in your eye??

It is slowly clearing up, I think the drops seem to have worked. It's still red and it still feels lazy ie, slower to mave than my good eye and I still get the occasional stabbing pain but it is much better than that first day. That was agony. I am now considering getting on the bike.....

i remember having to put golden eye ointment (a cream) in my eye years ago. i put the first lot in my eyes whilst on the bus on my way home from the docs. it just smears all over your eyeball. was a hilarious journey home - could hardly see a thing through it. worked well though.
