Any car sales persons in the house?

I'm having a nightmare selling my Passat and just wondered if there is a general lull in sales at the moment?

I honestly thought it was going to shift quickly and it's been well over a month - really glad I put a deposit down on another car now!

    3 times ebay
    E & M
    Autotrader
    Local paper

It's certainly not too much either - at least œ1500 cheaper than any forecourt.

I didn't want to give too many details, as some may think I am trying to shift it on here! I just wondered if there is a general slump.

    But as you asked:

The car is an 03 plate
    74000 miles
    FSH
    Spotless condition
Good spec with heated seats, ff fog lights, climate control, trip computer.

Unfortunately Petrol (2.0S 20 valve). I am under no illusion that it would of gone in a week if it was Diesel, but then I wouldn't be asking œ4400ono for it! More like œ5500 to œ6000

Even the petrol models are on the forecourts for nearly œ7000 though (bear in mind you pay approximately œ500 more from a dealer for the warranties etc)

Also I think the fact that I live in the swamps doesn't help - people aren't going to travel too far for it.

I am buying a van type thingy (Jap import) and the guy doesn't do trade in.

Funny about the petrol vs diesel thing, because based on yearly averages (from t'internet) we worked out that for the extra cost of buying a diesel, you would need to do something like 50,000 miles to get your money back against the cost of buying a petrol.

What do'ya think? Am I asking too much in the current climate?

I worked out when I bought my Mondeo that I would need to drive 23,000 miles a year to save on getting a Diesel, based on fuel costs at the time. That was with a straight three year payback as well, if I discounted the capital element I reckon I would need to do nearer 30,000 miles per year for a three year payback.

Therefore diesels no good for me, or 90% of drivers TBH.

  • I recenetly sold my wife`s car.I used Parkers price guide for an indicative price but they were way out.I judged the price by gettin some p/ex prices from 3 dealers, and looking at similar cars in the classifieds.

I sold it via,Autotrders website in the end,but I still had to reduce the price.

However I still made œ1000 more than any of thedealers had offered,so I was happy.

Unfortunately used car prices have dropped dramatically recently.I'm constnatly surprised how much car you can get for so little these days.

There are so mnay used cars around, buyers can afford to be fussy.

    BTW,what colour is it?

Colour can make a real difference to the saleablilty of a car.

Seagull - I found the same thing, but it's in our blood - we can handle the initial out lay, but we can't handle the running costs!

I compare it to my industry - Refrigeration - the amount of people that buy these HUGE freezers (US style), then argue that its an A Energy Rating - HA! Get the right size fridge at a F Rating and you'll still be better off!!

Have you compared it against what Parkers say its worth

We use this at work along with the Glasses guide, usually pretty spot on

Metallic blue - looks quite nice against the crome trim.

  • Looking at the details you've told us, there's a few things that stand out.

It's a petrol, which will rule it out for a good number of buyers.
Combine that with the fact it's only an S trim level, and buyers know that they can afford to be choosy.
Then there's the issue of it being relativley high mileage, which will put even more people of.

On the plus side, blue is a good colour.

You may find that you're actually advertising it too cheaply. It may sound strange, but for people looking at cars, one priced lower than normal, makes them suspicious. You may get more response to adverts if you increase the price, to bring it more inline with other similar models. But, if you've been advertising it for a while, people will notice it, and still keep avoiding it. Best option there, is to stop advertising it for a few weeks, then re-advertise it again.
Failing that, an ebay auction is guaranteed to shift it, but maybe not at the price you want.

i-drive, I've been offered over 4k trade! You much make a fortune if you are a trader with those prices.

Full history up to a year ago (I do too low a mileage to bother with service wthin a year).

One previous owner - my missus works with the guy that owned it before us.

Stug ... try ringing around your local Taxi & Private hire companys ... i own a small Taxi firm and we quite often get people ringing us to see if we're looking to buy secondhand vehicles and quite a few drivers buy their vehicles this way ... the full service history will be a bonus but the S spec will be a negative

    Thanks Simon

I've actually decided I'm going to sell my Peugeot 307 (2.0 TDI) instead and keep the Passat. The Peugeot is a 51 plate with FSH and 50,000 miles on the clock. I think that this will sell easier on a private sale, then I'm going to trade the passat at a later date.

    Thanks all for advice though

    Stu
