Getting my new bike sat am, dead excited, but have no way of getting it back so need a bike rack. Anybody got any recommendations, is it better to stick them on top on on the back, i've just bought a new car so either way is has to be sympathetic to paintwork and carrty 2 bikes.
Thoughts?

Saris Bones?
It fits my 3 Series Coupe. They fit most cars actually with an adaptor for hooking it on to glass rear windows.Roadie

I have a towbar rack and a roof rack and I much prefer the roof rack. I'm a big guy and my bikes are all under 32lb so lifting them up's no problem.
One of the worst things about a towball rack is that in the winter, your car wheels pick all the salt up off the road and soak you bikes in salty water for however long your journey lasts whereas on the roof, it's only the spray from other vehicles that gets to them and there's long periods of clean water rinsing them back off again.
I'd recommend Thule Pro-ride.

I've got a BMW convertible and a hi mount rack from halfords, works ok with 2 bikes. But Wherever the strap touch's the car I fit tape to stop it scratching(Car is Black and shows every little mark)0

Car is worth 45x the value of the bike so I care more about the car getting scratched than the bike getting wet, what's the best in terms of being car friendly?

Saris Bones is an option - it fits most cars. I have one and am fairly happy with it.
But two things to watch for:
1) its design means that you need a fairly 'open' front triangle on the bike to get it onto the rack. A hardtail will be fine, my Anthem is fine, but if you have something with a shock mount attached to the underside of the top tube you may struggle.
2) You'll need to keep the rubber feet clean and free of grit. Otherwise you're going to get scratches on your car's paintwork

But, the way I get around it is to put it on upside down with the wheels sticking up in the air and use the seat post as the down tube in respect to securing it by the straps. One tip is to buy a couple of œ2 Fasty canvass straps to further secure the seat post to the rack and the handlebars to the rack too to stop them twisting around and knackering something.

Ok, so if i get a tow bar fitted which is the best one for this, what I'm asking is for recommendations, so far we have saris bones and get a tow bar, not alot of options to look at!
