Riding a roadie?

I wonder how it's like riding a road bike (hehe it even rhymes! [:D])
The speed, the aero dynamique pr‚cision m‚canique (Kraftwerk fans will know [:D])...

I find straight roads boring on a MTB, uphills OK because they're easier than off-road, and the road descents simply don't cut it because you're missing all the offroad fun!

But riding an elegant, light, sleek road bike, going fast on a free road, possibly in a beautiful setting like the Alps, how would it be like? I think I'd look at the offroad trails branching off the road wishing I had my MTB, but would the speed and excitement take me?

Basically, can road riding be a lot of fun? [:D]

To clip or not to clip, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind of men to suffer the dings and contusions of unclipp'd riding, or to bind thy feet against a sea of gnarly singletrack and by these contraptions, ride o'er them with ease. To clip... to slip no more, and by clipping to end the buttache and the thousand natural shocks that ryders are heir to; tis a consummation devoutly to be honed. No clip - to slip perchance to be thrashed most heinously...

  • try a 'crosser, it opens up the possibilities. Road riding can be a bit boring, you don't really get the sensation of speed, well only in short bursts.

the alps have miles and miles of steep, smooth, winding alpine roads with hair-pins and massive un-fenced off drops to the sides (watch it if you're a bit slack with the brakes). ridden some of them on the mtb when getting from one trail to another, and you can easily pick up speeds up to about 40mph, so god knows how fast you could get on a road bike. it's excellent fun. soooooooo fast.

think i'd only bother if i lived there though. on holidays i'd rather be descending as fast as i can on the trails.

Its fun.....but not as much as off road

Its more quiet and relaxing, rather than a good way to release aggression/energy. If i was made of money i would have t roadie but you need a decent bike to enjoy it, a cheapy one isn't fast/comfortable enough

ddraver - that's a bit like saying that mtbiking is more quiet and relaxing, because you might ride quiet tow paths. it depends where you ride and how you ride.

Try really honking out of the saddle up a massive climb, then flying down the descent at the other side. That is a perfect way to release agression/energy. I was screaming to myself on a local climb at the weekend then the adrenaline rush of hitting 75kph on the downhill is some sensation.

It's just different that's all. I love road bikes and mtb's in equal measure and road biking definitely improves fitness.

Sunday morning cruising along a country road, chatting with my dad, and sprinting for 'the points' at the top of the climbs, it doesn't get any better.

Well, I believe you it must be good. Otherwise, road biking wouldn't be as popular as it is with Tour de France, Giro etc. Maybe it's the purest form of biking. Although I think MTBs are the most versatile. [:)]

I would buy a road bike to ride it now and then if money wasn't an issue. This way, it's better to invest in the one bike that I have.

Try sprinting with 30 other like minded idiots at 35+mph as you all try and elbow each other into the kerb, you'll get a good sense of speed then!

  • Road bikes are different. I do both with a tendency towards the mountainbike mainly cos I hate traffic. However get a good quiet swinging country road with smooth surfaces and a good bit of lightweight kit between your legs and you can really get into a rythm. Hill climbs are fab if you have slightly masochistic tendencies and descents are fast - my carbon Scott CR1 will easily get up to 50mph on the short descent from the Cow & Calf into Ilkley so on an Alpine descent I can't imagine what speed it would do. It's quite a buzz and worth spending the money if you can afford it. It's also good complimentary training for MTBing.

    I can't believe you've never ridden a roadie!

    You should try it.

I love riding both my roadie and MTB, but for sheer speed and responsiveness nothing beats a decent road bike. Honking up the hills, flying down them at 50mph+ with no brakes (compared to MTB discs anyway), sprinting for the road signs. Only downside is the traffic.

My road bike makes even a fast XC bike like my Anthem feel like an oil tanker.

Haha I was accepting Fozzy's childish mentality above [:D]

Although, yes, I'll get me a road bike after I buy my dream MTB one day (hope something like this will do!) [:)]
I'll take it for some fast road rides, fast circles on the bike track around a lake in the evening and stuff.
I think just pedalling fast and even, in a monotone fashion, is actually pretty "hypnotic" and good for clearing the head!
