Hi all,

Cycling home from work last night at around 23.00 (following a nice warm day) i found myself eating and sniffing up all manner of creature (which i can pretty much cope with) as iwent along, but also found them getting into my eyes. As you can imagine - not ideal for a cyclist on a road to get distracted/blinded like that. I am gonna get some glasses, but as i will always be riding that late and it will always be dark i obviously cant just use standard shades as i wont be able to see a thing.
Are there any glasses for protection from flies/midges/whoknowswhatelse which are clear for use at night?

Thanks

Dave

most riding glasses come with clear lenses.

i use Bloc ones. they come with clear, yellow and dark lenses and you can change them as you need.

Get some with interchangable lenses. I got my DHB ones from wiggle for œ25, and can't complain about them.

• Either get clear lenses or get glasses with interchangeable lenses for different light conditions.

I've got the Specialized Chicanes with the Adaptalite lenses, although I do get funny looks wearing them on the bus........[:D][:D]

Or concentrate more on our jobs me thinks [:D]. I am going out 3/4 days a week now, and playing tennis/going for a run if not. Appart from Sundays which is official bbq day, when I put on all the weight I lost during the week [:D]. Summer is good...

I have the DHB ones and they're pretty good for the money. You get clear, blue and semi-mirrored lenses and a hard case for œ25. I got them after a fly kamikazed into my eye also!

Well, you can get really cheap protective glasses with clear lenses, or you can buy ones with interchangeable lenses for all riding conditions, which cost a bit more... Mine are these. They are good. Don't budge from your head even if you fall off and do some rolls (don't ask me how I know [:D])

To clip or not to clip, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind of men to suffer the dings and contusions of unclipp'd riding, or to bind thy feet against a sea of gnarly singletrack and by these contraptions, ride o'er them with ease. To clip... to slip no more, and by clipping to end the buttache and the thousand natural shocks that ryders are heir to; tis a consummation devoutly to be honed. No clip - to slip perchance to be thrashed most heinously...

My other hobby is woodwork - so I usually ride wearing my safety 'glasses' (they're plastic) I use when running power tools. Can be relatively cheap too (current pair was about œ4). These are clear - have seen some with a yellow tint (but never tired these, for woodwork or cycling).
There is no secret ingredient...
• I've been using my bike for about 9 months to commuite daily with, and use a pair of Bloc riding glasses, they as others have written 3 colours of lens, and this time of year the tints are handy and through the winter the clears are handy to stop the rain, and grit thrown up by passing cars going in your eyes.
also handy when it gets to -5 like it did on the 5th feb this year as it stops the water in your eyes getting so cold you can hardly see.[8D]
as you can imagine I ware mine all the time, great considering i only paid œ2 from a cyclist at work who always upgrades his gear when new models come out haha ha.

• I bought a pair of Tifosi fototec Quam 1.5 same as these

There like Specialized Adaptlite, the lenses change with
lighting conditions, but quite abit cheaper
My lbs was doing them for œ30 and he knocked my œ5 off
Got them for œ25 extreme bargin thanks Highpeak Cycles!

Yep I wear yellow safety glasses (~œ3 from screwfix) when it is gloomy or dark....they actually do make everything seem brighter improving visibility. Plus on an overcast day, they make it seem sunny [:)]

I don't think safety specs such as Bolle Silium clear for dull-days (and nights) and Bolle Spider ESP's for sunnier days (or you can get clear versions of the Spider too) can't be beaten for value for money!

They sell some safety specs for under œ3 that look no different to some proper stylish cycle glasses I paid œ25 for. In fact I was so happy I bought a few pairs just incase they stopped selling this type. I use them for night riding and riding in the rain.

• Oakley transitions. Or some multi lense kits like blocs. I had a pair of them for over ten years and they have been fantastic for the money. Only reason I went for the Oakley's was because I got them cheap (œ70 from ebay) and they're photochromatic.

ANother of the Bolle sirrium? users here, mainly after getting a fly in one eye. Starts streaming cant see out of it, followed by 20 yards later one in the other. At 20mph not being able to see is not good. Worn glasses on a bike ever since.

I wear specs all the time when cycling. Even in perfect weather, stuff can get thrown up by traffic on the road. Off-road, stuff can flip round off your front tyre and end up hitting you in the face.

There are all manner of fine metal shards, grit and nasty carcinogenic substances which can really damage your eyes. The faster you go, the more likely you are to get hit by ever more nasty stuff. I see people cycling without glasses and I think they're nuts.

Of course, they see me without my helmet on and think I'm nuts, so the karmic circle is complete [:o)]
• Yeah Eye protection is a must, I had a eye injury some time ago
which was one of the most painful things to have to put up with
luckily no long term damage

but if I had some glasses on it wouldn't of happened

The thing with Bolle (and more expensive cycling glasses) is that they're optically correct, i.e. you don't get the odd distortion you often get with really cheap safety glasses.

I baulk at paying œ25 for a set of glasses which I'm likely to loose or break in a few months, but œ5-œ7 of relatively stylish, comfortable, optically guaranteed safety specs seems a great deal to me (especially as I get the Bolle Siluim from work ;-)
• I follwed SJP's advice on another thread about the Bolle glasses from that Safety One ebay shop and really don't think you can go wrong at œ6 or so (in fact they'd be a snip at 3 times that). They look good, fit well, the lenses are good and they're certified safety specs so you know they're safe.
• I'm currently using some Tchibo ones bought via my local Somefield supermarket, with 3 interchangeable lenses for œ6.
Decathlon do some very good ones for œ12,oo.

• Another vote for the Bolles from Safety_one_uk on ebay.

I tend to always wear glasses cycling. I will definitely continue to wear safety specs after having an egg thrown at me and just miss my face.

too many pratts out there

• I ride These without any misting probs.

They come with 5 sets of lenses that have vents in the top. Comfy shades and a little like Oakley M frames.
Well worth 20quid.

• Thanks for the replies. Regretably I went out and bought a pair of glasses before a lot of your posts were made. Had i waited, i would probably had looked at screwfix for some cheapies. As it was i got some by Bloc with different colour lenses. Got the clear ones in as i only ride in the dark. Love them. Very comfy, and no movement. Next job - some kind of mask for my mouth. For every 2 or 3 flies i hear bouncing off my glasses one flies down my throat. yum, they are not. Tried breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth to prevent it but couldn't get enough air into my lungs. Suggestions for face masks please ...
Thanks again to you all
