MTB Leadership Course
Ello all,
In a couple of weeks I'm having a go at passing the MTB Leadership Course level 1 or maybe if I'm good enough level 2.[;)]
I was hoping some of you on here could give me a heads up as to what to expect and also any hints and tips, and more importantly what kit to take.(Yes I know I do have to take me bike [:D]).
Thanks alot,[8D]
Jim

where abouts are you doing this course? how much was it, and can anyone do it?
sounds interesting...0 -
I'm doing it at Afan in Wales,it's œ200.I think you need to have a few years riding experiance.
I had a chat with the guy before i booked and told him what i had done and how often, and he said no probs and booked me on.
I think he might have booked me just for the comedy factor!!!![;)]
I've been asked by my local MTB club to have a go at passing the course.

Let us now how you get on and what its like.
sounds good, i might look into it myself...0 -
Which one is it? I did a two day one with the Association of British Cycling Coaches (ABCC), which I transferred across to MIAS. We did a day in the clasroom/Wksp learning about bikes, equipment, risk assessments, Navigation, road safety, fundamentals of leading a group etc, etc. We had anassesment where we had to demonstrate the following(for level 2):
-Complete use of breaks showing control when using Max power.
-Appropriate selection of gears for terrain with proactive selection and smooth shifting.
-Lift front wheel 30cm from ground
-Hold balance for 10 seconds
-lift wheel 15cm high over object.
-Drop off 50 cm (basically a curb)
-short downhill descents 30-45 deg
-short uphil climbs 20-30Deg.
-Sationary hop with both wheels clear of ground.
-Bunny Hop a 7.5 cm high object
-Speed jump a 7.5cm object.
We also did a short obstacle course with low bars to go under and a seesaw.
Day 2 was an all day ride with each of the group having to lead for about 30-45 minutes.
At the end the instructor assessed if we were level one or 2. To transfer the qual to MIAS I had to producer a log book of rides.

Jon,
That sounds just like this course that i'm going on!!!
I just hope i don't make a plonker of meself and fall off...[:D]
On the navigation section can use a GPS as an aid?
Speed is your friend and you can't get hurt in the Air!!!0 -
On the one I did you could although you should still be able to read a map and plan a route.

Yeah no probs with my map reading.Mind you my time and distance apprication might be rusty as it's different on a bike to walking, think I'll use my odometer and reset it at each waypoint.
Thanks jon
I'll let everyone know how i got on...

Are they going to let you do that? Surely the point of testingyou on it would be to see if you can do it.

What they are after is someone who can plan a route and lead people around it. If you use a GPS to do it I don't see what the difference is. It is only at level 3 when you start getting a long way away from civilization and would probably need good map reading skills. To be honest the guy who trained and assessed us didn't focus too much on the map reading side as we were all military, do it as part of our training and are tested anually.

Sorry I haven't got back to you all earlier, but I've been away for the weekend.
There shouldn't really be problem with my map reading as I'm Ex Military aswell,(I wasn't an Officer so I'm safe with a map[;)])
I can't see a problem with reseting an odometer at every checkpoint/waypoint as this will tell you how far you have gone, espech if you riding /walking on bearings.
An odometer and a GPS are Aids to navigation and should never be relied upon,I was taught to always trust my compass and map.
I have never been lost!!!!
I've just missed placed myself on the map...

Thanks for all the reply's
The course was excellent,it was run by a guy called Paul from the Afan Valley bike hire company, there was a couple of guys from the Army(Adventure training instructors)a guy who was starting up a guide company near Thetford, and a Mountain Leader Instructor aswell.
Paul the instructor definatly knew his stuff.
I learnt loads that weekend, and I would recommend it aswell. The tests were fun based and done as part of a few games we did,the assement was abit nerve raking as their was quite a few pros there and I did want to make myself a look a noob. The map reading in place was difficult,as was some of the scenarios that they threw into the mix, like missing riders and injury's,and the odd broken chain etc etc.The ride was about 25k's around Afan and took in parts of The Wall.
Think the next course I want to do now is a maintance one, anyone know of any near the Milton Keynes area?
