Have a look for recent threads on this price band, have been many. I'd certianly look at the Trek 4500.

I was in identical situation about a month ago buddy! & as it happens my girlfriend is same hight & Weight! Sure were not sharing? haha
In the end i was doing my birds head in and she went away and got her bike all on here own, prob for the best!
Anyway she came back with a womens 07 Specialized Hardrock sports disc for œ350 from a LBS! She is made up with it and we have been in delamere every weekend since she got it!
Despite its reputation as 'Lard Rock' i dont think the bike is 'THAT' heavy... my girlfriend gets it in & out the car on her own & has no complaints on hills and she is a pretty girly girl! Maybe there a few weak arse's on here haha!
My advise would be to try & get Hydro breaks though! The Mechanical discs on My GF hardrock arnt the best & dont give here much confidence & she gets sore hands/fingers! She already wants some juicys haha!0 -
forgot to mention, i changed the tyres on my GF and it made an amazing difference!0
-
what did you change them to timmy ?
Trek 60000 -
i cant remember the model of the top my head,
the bike came with steel/wire 2.1 resolutions i think! Big & Bulky, as she is only a beginer, not doing anything to demanding and as the weather is fair i lashed on the Kevlar 2.0 specialized tyres that came on my stumpjumper! less grip but far faster rolling (Obviously) & in all honesty more suited to the general xc riding she is doing @ this time of year!
I could notice the difference straight away when using her bike to go on a ciggie run to the shop! haha!0 -
Timmy perhaps my wife can share your GF bike seen as were into sharing things LOL . Thanks for your prompt response her bike is one I was thinking of as well as the Trek that Supersonic suggested . Thanks guys....keep em coming I may push to œ500...
Spesh Stumpy Pro0 -
if you do happen to go the Haardrock route go for the one up from my GF, œ400 & you get Hydros!
Like everyone will tell you, take here down the shops & let her try em out! My GF test rode her bike from the shop to my nans & back haha!0 -
The 400 quid Hardrock Sport Hyd is better value, but very heavy and has an undamped fork. Good to upgrade, but is 4lbs heavier than the Trek which also has a better frame, fork, parts and wheels!

I'm temped to get the Trek 4500 for my wife - Does it have disc brakes (I didn't think it did) and if not do you know if the hubs are disc ready0
-
Its Vs as standard, but is fully disc ready with hubs and seperate shifters. The fork is excellent, well controlled, and 9spd drivetrain very slick for the money.

Thanks for the quick reply.
My wife went out on my GT Aggressor XC1 on Sunday and found it much lighter than her current dimondback (which is not wearing well) and now is thinking about getting a real bike so she can join me on the trails.
I was hoping it was disc ready as I'll probably upgrade the brakes on mine and put my current ones on her's (new pads of course).
The only problem is I don't know of many Trek dealers in Bristol who have the 4500 WSD in stock - I'll phone around and see if I can get some one to order one in to test.0 -
Do try the mens as well!

I've just seen a 2006 fury 16 inch frame for 400 quid in my local halfords - So I'm going to take Nic (GF) to try it out tomorrow and maybe try to find a trek 4500 WSD. If the fury feels good and fits her would it be a good buy? Are they any other things that should be considered - Esp WSD models, though these are proving hard to find?0
-
That œ400 Fury would be a snip and Halfords have got 10% off all bicycles this week with National Cycling Week so it will be œ360. For that money, I was going to suggest a new Ladies Carrera Kraken.
My vote is with the Fury for sure!0 -
Went out looking at bikes for Nic (GF) today. Tried the Avalanche 1.0 2.0 and the Fury 2006. She didn't want to spend 500 on the 1.0 (I even offered some cash up) so it was the Fury 2006 which fitted and felt just a good as the 1.0 though slighty heavier, which I thought was a bargin at 360 notes (seeing that it's got a better spec than my 3 month old aggressor xc1), picking it up tomorrow so I'll give it a good going over when I get back (heard to much about loose cranks) and I'll treat Nic to a new lock and some slicks for commuting and if time maybe we'll the trails
Thanks for all your advice (again)0
