These look like a cheap option/upgrade to increase the rise and help my back, anyone have any experience of them[?]

Thanks in advance

I have the EA70 mid rise bars, a bit lighter but the same shape. They work well and I like them, they are quite wide though. I like the extra leverage, but it makes things hairy in tight woodland situations.

  • Andy, have you tried moving your saddle forward?

IIRC it's meant to be set up so that if you put your elbow on the tip of the saddle, your middle finger should touch the steerer clamp bolt on the stem. You might find that if it's already there, by moving the saddle forward half an inch or so, maybe even an inch, you're not reaching quite so far and you might help your back.

The other thing i was thinking is, saddle height. As you sit on the saddle, the ideal height would mean while sitting on the bike, put your heel on the pedal, and spin to it's lowest point. You're leg should be virtually full extension, then drop the post a couple of cm's, so that when you pedal, your leg still has a bit of an angle at full stretch, but not perfectly straight.

Also could try rotating your bars back a few degrees.

Keep tweaking. Sometimes it's that simple. I've cured many comfort issues on my bikes, just by fiddling. (But ultimately, any excuse to buy new kit and I'm willing!)

  • Or, get a Swiss ball and do some core stability exercises. Stengthen up the trunk of your body, as mountain biking is very demanding on this area of the body.

Mate, if you can hold off on making a purchase I've got either EA30 or EA50 risers at home, not sure if they're low, mid or high rise though. I'll find out what they are when I get home, you can have them as a get well pressie if they're gonna help [:)]

  • Swiss ball is one of those giant inflatable balls. they're really cheap and there's tonnes of stuff you can do with it to stretch and strengthen. Google swiss ball exercises and see what comes up.

I have the low rise EA30's really nice extremely wide though. works well enough for me, though the finish wears off really easily where the bars/shifters have been even where my computer has been the finish is worse for wear.

I'd second having a look at saddle position. Had the same problem after replacing the bars and stem and suddenly gave me back ache after a couple of hours riding.

Moved the saddle forward about 2 cm (was quite set back before) and its now back to being good again...

  • I like my EA70 bars, but they were cut when they arrived, so they are pretty much spot on for me. Generally i thought you were supposed to be able to take your hands off the bars and not fall onto your face. If you can't then you are stretching too much.
