Dirt cheap fix
I'm getting myself a new MTB at the start of next month (when I've got the funds), but being the impatient git I am, I'm itching to get out on abike, even if it's just on the road / cycle tracks for the moment, to build up a bit of stamina / fitness.
I've got an old Giant Boulder Sports sat in the garage which i bought off Ebay for œ10 a while back, but which needs the gears sorting on it.
I'm pretty sure I can get the rear mech working, just need to change the cable, although it may be missing a few bits, so i may have to re-assess this, but the front mech is completely seized so I'm going to replace it.
So, long story short, can anyone recommend a dirt cheap front (and possibly rear) mech that i can get hold of ASAP - only has to last 2 or 3 weeks so I'm really not fussed about the quality.
When I get my new bike, I'll then flog the Giant off on ebay again.
Currently has Shimano Altus mechs.
Cheers

Deore mech's are quite cheap & better than the Altus.
The spec scale goes Altus, Alivio, Deore, LX, XT, XTR
Best to change inner cable & outer casings at the same time as it sounds like the bike needs them
I have a used (but in good working order) Alivio front mech, 31.8mm, you can have it for a fiver inc postage if you want (& if it's the right size!) Email me if you're interested

Thanks Andy, I may well take you up on that front Mech - as long as I can get the rear working!
Excuse my ignorance (I'm a complete newbie to all this) but what does the size relate to - is it the clamp for fitting to the down tube?
Cheers0 -
yes. well seat tube, the down tube is the diagonal one from the headset to the bb.

Also, the size will be stamped on the inside of the clamp.

Nothing on the inside of the clamp - it's a half clamp thing, as it was attached to a bracket behind the front gears - I've attached a pic

I've measured across this and looks like 31.8mm will be fine, so i just need to sort the rear mech, then I'll drop you a mail Andy to get the front from you[:)] (will be Thurs at the earliest as I've got to drive to London tonight / back tomorrow night)
I've got a replacement cable already, what's the best way of cutting the outer casing to size without knackering it?0 -
Ahhh, it's a different style of clamp to mine, I don't think mine would fit, sorry!

Ah balls! Wouldn't your one just fit around the seat post, instead of using the brackety thing? Was plannign on just scrapping all of the front mech as it's completely seized anyway.0
