wheels of forks for around œ120
ive got a standard 06 carrera kraken. i want to upgrade it but cant decide whether to start with forks or wheels. its currently got sr suntour xcr forks and no name hubs on the original double-walled rims.
at the moment im swaying towards new wheels from merlin as im guessing this would lose weight and also the original hubs are rubbish. ill be upgrading the forks in a couple of months time in that case.
so for around œ100-œ120 what wheel set should i go for. i dont have clue what the different rims etc mean.
thanks very much

what are the current brakes? as if V's are you going to go disc at some time. if disc then that needs to be taken into consideration.

the brakes are tektro io cable discs. ive been looking on merlin at the custom disc wheels. what is the difference between xc717 and xm719. they would probably be on xt hubs0

717 are XC wheels. 719 are "all mountain" wheels. Slightly heavier, bit tougher and 2mm wider. Either way they are very good wheels. XT hubs are a big improvement too..... I recently bought XM719 rims on XT hubs and they are fantastic. If you opt for this as an upgrade make sure you get 6 bolt hubs rather than splined as the splined are shimano disc rotor specific

good advice above. If going for a cone and cup hub. eg. shimano type get the bearings well greased up before use.

Mavic CrossRides, they'll work with V's and Discs.
I have some on my old Heckler (the spare bike) and their pretty decent.

I'd stick with the XT / mavic combination, i've heard that the crossrides are hard to true if you buckle them. The Hubs will need periodic servicing, normally about every 6-12 months depending on how often you ride. Most LBS will be able to do this, or you can learn yourself, apparantly its not hard to service the hubs.
