1 day at Glentress
Hi Everyone,
I am going up to Glentress next week for one days riding. We are going up the night before, camping over (hopefully), biking all day and then driving the 4 hours back home. So i have a few questions.
1. Is there a good campsite close to Glentress? The closer and more convenient the better.
2. I have never been to Glentress before but after looking at the 7 Stanes website i think we will tackle the red route and then take on the black V trail. Is this the best approach when we just have the one day?
Any other helpful tips would be much appreciated
Cheers

You'll need to be reasonable fit to tackle the red then the black. The black is a reasonablly physical challenge as some of it's quite bumpy and demanding on the forearms. The more technical sections are towards the end, when you don't want to be too tired.
It depends one the type of riding that you like. If its XC that you prefer then it'd probably be better to ride the black first and then you can always head back up to do parts of the red and cut it shorter if you're getting tired. If you like drops and jumps more then another option is to ride Innerleithen first (just a few miles down the road from Glentress) and then head up to Glentress for the red/play around at the freeride.
Sorry but I can't give you any advice on campsites.

Campsite that I used when I visited GT, quite cheap, not too far from the trailhead & the bar is next to the camping field [:D]

Yeah the 29 miles for both routes is slightly more than we are used too but i think we will be ok. Our local is 23 miles so we arent far off. If we are camping we will be up early and just take our time through the day and enjoy it. We are only there for the day so we want to cram as much in as possible.
Andy B i actually listed that campsite after a random Google search so now you have mentioned it as well i think we will be heading there (nothing to do with the bar...honest [:)])
Cheers for the help fellas0 -

Bear in mind that this is a Scottish trail which means it's pretty bumpy with some fairly long uphill sections. The black is a bit more demanding than the average natural trail, especially if you're on a HT. If you take things easy then it's okay but I'm pretty sure you'll be feeling it on the redemption climb, especially after the bumpiness of the deliverance descent. It's a great trail though.

Well we had a good time! It was throwing it down when we woke at 5.30am which was when we wanted to get going so waited and waited for it to stop or at least calm down a little and we didnt get on the trail till gone 9am and headed straight out on the black. Really enjoyed it but my god i don't think we have ever done so much climbing! Riding hardtail the downs were a strain on the wrists and forearms but it was great fun. We didnt do the red which is a shame so we didnt get the full Glentress experience. I know we missed some good sections like spooky wood so we will have to go back for that.
Just from the black though i think i prefer Kirroughtree. The smile factor does it for me, and after Kirroughtree i was smiling ear to ear. But as i say we never did the red so watch this space.....0
