Disc brake warning!!!
Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but it seems appropriate for this area. Moderators, please feel free to move it to a more suitable section.
After seeing the bit in this month's MBUK about the diced squirrel that tried to launch itself through someone's disc brake, I remembered this article (apologies, not one for the squeamish!!!!)
http://www.on-one.co.uk/index.php?module=announce&ANN_user_op=view&ANN_id=442
It seems a really obvious thing to avoid doing, but after recently having almost done the same thing myself (only lost the nail), I wanted to make sure that you lot are aware of the danger.
If I have saved some fingers with this warning, I will be happy.

Oof! [B)]
I once had my finger pinched by the rotor while wiping dust, just because the wheel moved a bit. Be extra careful!
P.s. good thing it wasn't his pus$y finger... [:p]
To clip or not to clip, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind of men to suffer the dings and contusions of unclipp'd riding, or to bind thy feet against a sea of gnarly singletrack and by these contraptions, ride o'er them with ease. To clip... to slip no more, and by clipping to end the buttache and the thousand natural shocks that ryders are heir to; tis a consummation devoutly to be honed. No clip - to slip perchance to be thrashed most heinously...

^Crazy, I know someone called Stumpy Dan too. Surely not a Dan Hoyle?

Kestrel it would appear we have a common friend...
In fact, do I know you!?0 -
Truespin, how very bizarre! Dan Hoyle is a Technology teacher at the RGS Guildford School, and I attend the Sixth form of this place. The only reason I sort of "know him" is because he is/was a link teacher for my "Young Enterprise Company" - which in effect meant that he oversaw the running of a company created by a group of us for this year!
I wouldn't have thought I knew you. Your profile names you as Simon - unless you happen to be Simon Tarrant also of the RGS Guildford, it would seem unlikely. [;)]

Heh, Dan is an old school friend of mine
He mentioned the young enterprise stuff the other day actually...
He's a cyclist too - was trying to get him out for a ride on Sunday but it's the staff summer BBQ then apparently
I'll name drop you and freak him out0 -
Sure, feel free to name drop me. I'm pretty sure it will freak him. I'm the finance director of the company, if that helps...

Are discs really that sharp? is there a reason why they cant have rounded profile edges seeing as its not the outer edge that the pads touch?0
-
I think it's just that the discs need to be relatively thin so that they can fit between in the calipers. If they're rotating fast, they are going to cut well....
Giant XTC SX '060 -
hoho geared discs no matter how fast your going your discs always rotate at a nice safe speed, wait did i say that outloud? *points wildly* PATENT PENDING!!! PATENT PENDING!!!
Anyone who points out that slower spining discs would be less effective for the same size pads will be shot.0 -
The disc edge didn't do that, I think it was the finger getting caught between the fork and the disc "legs".
Hmm, the wheel is one big lever which moves the disc, with its spider legs being the small lever... It makes a huge force. If it were rounded, it would still grind the finger, would be even worse!
But maybe they could make plastic pads to fit in between the legs on the disc, so it is full from the side, and a bit safer. For squirrels and fingers both! [:D]
