œ15 is more reasonable, its a very quick job with the correct tools, and not that hard even without the correct tools.

Sounds reasonable. Is this a job that the beginner shouldnt try?0

Just do it yourself. It was one of the first 'proper' things I did on my bike.

If its as little as œ15 (or even œ25) then i'll let a shop do it. Iam tempted to have a go though, but I will have to resist.0

Maybe its 'cos Im a cheapskate 16yr old,. but œ15 seems a decent saving for doing a relatively easy task...!

Its time consuming, but straight forward. Installing the crown race and star nut is the hardest part, but with care and patience will be done in a few mins.

Oh yeah, gettin the star nut in was a PITA, but I realised it doesnt have to be THAT straight...

I don't think fitting forks is something anyone should attempt unless they know what they're doing. If you make a mistake it's inevitably a rather expensive one.

True, but I think its more time consuming than anything. You really have to be pretty dumb to cut the steerer too short!

Seriously, what could you do wrong? Cut the steerer too long? Measure twice (or five times), cut once.
If you push the star nut in too far/wonkily, just bang it out the other end...

Not trying to be an arguementative prat, but, apart from the star nut, what else is there?
You mean things like bolting on the brake calipers?

someone on here cut a fork too short as i remember, also, cutting it square is not a no brainer, nor is crushing a steel tube. Given that getting it wrong could wreck œ300 of fork. Would you take a 20/1 bet on getting it right?

Got some quotes back for fitting them, thought it might be of interest.

Do it yourself [8D] Just measure and measure again. Then again to make sure [:D], it's easy.

Without any tools at all?! Just knock it down with a flat head screwdriver going around the steerer.

I meant things like getting the crown race off the old fork (mine was seized on solid, not even the proper crown race tool could get it off properly), putting it ON the new fork, cutting the steerer tube straight, remembering which order the bits of the headset go back on (which for a beginner can be confusing), knowing which order to tighten the bolts - stem & top cap, getting the star nut in straight, knowing how far down to hammer the star nut (and risking it going too far).
There are a plethora of complications which is why I think that for a beginner it's too complicated a job to attempt and too pricey should it go wrong.

When do you stop being a 'beginner' and a competant mechanic? It certainly isnt based on riding capability.
Surely you have to start somewhere...?

Yeah, but start with things like setting up your brakes and gears, lubing cables, making adjustments etc. I certainly wouldn't jump straight in the deep end with something as complicated as installing a set of forks.
I consider myself a competent mechanic and I started with simpler things and gradually worked my way up.

It took me hours to figure out how to change my brake pads, and even so I got air into the system [:D]. Everything looks easier when you have done it before, I wouldn't attempt anything unless you are with a competent mechanic.

As Cazz says, and I agree, you have to start somewhere; start small.
