Steerer Length for a GT Zaskar
Oh wise ones.
I'm after buying some Kona Project 2 rigid forks for a GT Zaskar frame i've just won off the bay.
I know the frame will suit 100mm forks, but the dilemma I have is what Steerer length would me the minimum I should get, as when looking on the bay some have been cut down to 140mm-150mm and some are nearly 210-230mm.
I know if I go for the long option I can cut them down or put spacers on but the cheaper ones seem to be the cut down ones.
Can anybody enlighten me.

wait untill the framearrives and them measure it. your choice of headset and stem will also Effect the length you need.

As Nick says, wait and measure it.
Although I can tell you that my GT is a 'Large' frame (20.5) an the steerer tube on that is 210mm, which is enough for the stem and 10mm of spacers.

I have received the frame and it's a large frame so as you have said GTDave I will need to get one at least 200mm, it's just the ones under 180mm seem to go cheaper.0

Yep, if you cut them short, the resale value drops. So always cut longer and build up with spacers.

Hey Aphex2K so you run project 2's on your zaskar, what other kit have you got on it, as I'm not sure what else to put on it. I have a set of GT wheels which I might change when I can afford to upgrade them and I have Avid Ultimate v-brakes as the frame hasn't got disc tabs on. So really it will have kit on it that are surplus from my other bike a Scott Comp.
What steerer length have you got on the forks as well?0 -
Steerer length is a personal thing (yet again). If a steerer is long then it can be cut to the preferred length. My steerer is 225mm long, with 25mm of spacers above the headset. I'd never buy anything less than this, even if i did want shorter, purely so I can adjust as necessary rather than finding it's that bit too short for my riding.

OK here goes.
97 Zaskar frame
P2 forks
Avid Speed dial 7 levers
Sram twist shift 8 speed shifters
Club Roost Bars and bar ends
Tioga 110mm stem
FSA Orbit XL2 headset
Specialized BG2 saddle on a Ringle seat pin
XT front mech
White Industries crank with Pace/Middleburn/Stronglight rings *red anodised bolts and blue middleburn self extracting bolts)
Avid Arch Rival rim brakes
Sram 8 speed cassette
XTR rear mech with KCNC sealed jockeys
Mavic 222 rims on GT front hub and bog standard stx rc rear hub, with Schwalbe city jet tyres.
That enough info for ya? lol...
Will post a link to a pic later but I cannot find my USB cable for my camera. Watch this space.

Thanks for that just wanted a rough idea what you were running on your GT.
I am right in thinking that it is a 1 1/8 fork and headset I'm after.0 -
What year is your frame?
(If you're not sure, look at the rear dropout, the non-drive side, and it will tell you the frame number, which includes the year and month of the frame)
Mine's a 97 - non-disc compatible. And uses a 1 1/8 headset. I would expect that anything post 97 will be the same size.

Or buy a genuine Marzocchi (made in Italy not Taiwan) and get a new steerer fitted for œ40.

It's a 97 Zaskar, do you know what size seatpost it takes0
-
27.2 iirc
best bet is to take it into an LBS and they can use a set of calipers to measure it correctly. but im 99% sure, id hate you to get something stuck in there!
