Gear shifters? compatibility advice

Hi,
After the theft of my much loved GT from university I have been without a bike for some time.
After using my brothers bike which only appears to have 2 working gears to go over the downs today I was given my friends mountain bike.
Its pretty much brand new, but the gear changers are... well rubbish. those twisty grip things and one is broken.
its an 18 speed fully suspended bike (think it was from Halfords originally) and i want to put on rapid fire changers. what do i need to know? also finding 18 speed ones appears to be like looking for needle in hay stack... so can i fit 21 speed and just not change right down in gears? or would that go very wrong?
any advice appreciated.
p.s. i am aware i should prob buy a much better bike. this will come once i have got back into it.

Kingtech appears to be make
6 gears on the rear.0 -
good luck. take it into your LBS and see what they can do. i dont think it will be cost effective. unless they have some new old stock in the back some where.

it is actually swish enough for v brakes already so can just change the cable over
its actually a nice bike except for these silly gear twister things0 -
sorted then but suprized. replace the outers at the same time.

ermm.... outers....
in thick person speak, they are?0 -
gear cables. the shifter combo should come with the wire inners included. dont forget to order some outers for the cables. if the shifter combo does not come with inners then you will need to order both inners and outers for the gears and i would also replace the brake inners and outers at the same time. Note gear and brake cables are different.
