8spd and 9spd cross compatablity

Are 9sp cranksets compatable with 8spd chians and setups.

eg can i replace the my suntour cranks with deore 9 spd one and run an 8spd chain cassette and rerailer. its all new so uneven wear isnt a issue(other than a grounding the big ring and damaging it). To bo be honest i dont really like suntour cranks, they look cheap and the rings from my experience at least are very brittle. So replacing them would be nice if not nessercely required.

hmm then how are 8 and 9 spd chains different i though 9spd would be narrower but if they use the same chainrings they must be the same width right?

9 are narrower than 8.

just about every bike out there for sale today with a 8spd cassette on the back will have a 9spd compatable crankset on the front.

Chain width is only critcal on the back of the bike cos thats where the limitaions are.

i.e they need to cram an extra sprocket into a specified space. if your changing from 8 to 9 the only important bits are... r/h shifter, chain and cassete.

and the front chain rings if they are not 9spd compatable. and the jockey wheels could do with a change.

Truvativ on such as the Isoflow do differentiate between an 8 and a 9 speed crankset.

Changed the cassette and chain over on my 2006 GT, which obviously leaves the crankset and derailleur. (The drivechain wasn't worn, just a case of changing the brakes on a bike with integrated shifters and one thing leading to another.)

Only place I had problem was with the crankset, MAJOR chainsuck. Changed the crankset and no probs.
