Bike Carrier

Hi, because of a company car change i'm looking for a new cycle carrier, probably roof mounted as i won't have a towbar with the new car.
The new car is a BMW 3 Series if anyone has experience with racks or roof bars for those.I've seen in some threads i've searched that some full suss bikes can be awkward to attatch to some carriers and i have a Giant Trance if that makes a difference.
BTW this does mean my old Thule 3 bike tow bar mounted carrier is up for grabs......

For your bars, recomend you pay the extra for
the aerobars they look much better
dont think you will have any trouble
with your bike, I have a mount blanc barracuda
http://www.skidrive.co.uk/cycle/cyclefo ... =BARRACUDA
which would hold a Giant Trance fine

Thanks guys. I see a note about the aerobars saying an adaptor for some carriers may be needed but the Mont Blanc carrier says it fits aluminium profiles so not sure about that.Do you have personal experience of using the aerobars with the Barracuda DSL?0

Only ever used the Aerobars with Thule bike carriers, currently using the 591 carrier which is very good.

I use Seat aero bars & Thule 591 carriers, top quality stuff, I wouldn't trust my bikes with anything less (Orange 5 & Orange Gringo)
I have transported several different bikes using the 591's, and I've had no issues with the carriers (yet!)
I am fairly sure that the 591's would work with your Giant Trance, a friend has one and I think that the 591 clamp will sit just in front of the shock on the downtube.

When i say all sorted, i mean all sorted in my head as to what i need in terms of bars, adaptors and carriers. I will definitely go with the aero bars and its a toss up between the Barracuda and 591 carrier .I'm looking at the blurb to see which might have the better locking options.
I dont anticipate leaving the bikes on the roof unattended for any lengh of time but i would still like them to be there after a coffee break on the motorway. I'm guessing as both systems are Thule then they both have pretty much the same locks?0 -
MMM Motorway services are the worst crime spots around
I have seen loads of people fallen victim to crime
me inc
I would advise you get a Large Chain lock and put
through the bike frame and the Roof Bars while your
stopped, this might help people trying to snap the
bike carrier arms in two

May be interested in the rack; which model is it, where are you based and how much are you looking for?
Thanks0 -
Sent you an Email Adam.0

Well I can tell you, to my cost, that the Thule 591s don't fit a Commencal Meta 5.5.1. Moral of story - check they really DO fit before you buy!0

FF, i see from your blog the problem appears to be the cables getting pinched rather than the position of the shock itself so hopefully i wont have a problem as my cables run along the top .
Try before you buy is fine if you want to spend money in the high street and assuming they will let you assemble the whole kit on your car to be absoluely sure.
BTW i'm off to stay near Hawkshead for a week at the start of July. Is that hill between Hawkshead and Windermere a published route? I fancy giving the downhill part a go.0
