Creaking in my Head
I have developed a anoying creak around the
headset pretty sure it's coming from there
anyway
Planning on dropping the fork, what do I need to
look out for and what shall I clean and grease,
Pretty sure my headset is a Semi Intergrated type
dust cap sayes seealed cartridge systerm but no brand
Also it sounds pretty gritty so it cant be very well sealed

i have recently change my forks and had to buy some news spacers, only 1 choice in the lbs so that was fine
but since the change ive had a click/creak
after a ride i diagnosed it was coming from the the new spacer against the stem,
anyway mixed up the order of the spacers so old spacer touches the stem and
all seems fine now,
take a look around there aswell0 -
have a read of parktools. make sure the top cap is not pressing on the steerer, the cups have not worked lose.....

Ok stripped to headset

What type is that?
The top part is a steel ring thats pressed into the
frame that seems to hold the bearing ring in place
which I guess holds the actual ball's.

err that is not stripped all you have done is remove a few parts.
but from that picture you have problems. either you have parts missing or the bearings are not prloaded correctly.
pics of all of the other bits including the fork crown.

the reason for asking is that the ring on the right does not look like it fits through the big ring on the left. and with the ring on the right has text on it which to me says it should be visable.
it seams that there is a split ring missing from the headset to loacate the top bearing in the correct position.
but i must say that i am not aware of that particular headset but i am of zero stack headsets and actually have one in front of me.

yes it is a Zero stack. but different makers put them together differently.
right that does look ok. the only thing then is when the stem is back on and the top cap tightened. and the stem bolts tightened. take the top cap of and check that there is about 5mm from the top of the stem to the top of the steerer. if not put a spacer ontop of the stem refit top cap. undo the stem bolts tighten top cap bolt untill play gone re tighten parts. sorted. If not new bearings.

Would this be a suitable replacement
http://tinyurl.com/2y2q5e
I am tempted just to swap it out
especialy after feeling the one on
my mates Tyax elite that is silky
and it's only the budget ritchey
Could I use the same crown race or
is that asking for trouble
