... gonna get really slaughtered for saying this!!! But every one says manitou forks are sh*t but never come up with a reason. Has onyone got a reason and tried them to find out why they so rubbish?

These are the reasons i have heard, yet have no personal experience, are; That they have very bad reliability, particularly with their seals, and they are plain just not as good as the competitors...

flexy, seals are crap, when the tyres hit the crown the first fix did not work. (Oh it was the second time they had had this problem.

parts for forks over 3 years old not possible to get.

generally if you got a fork that worked you were lucky and it didi work ok.

the top end forks were very good but needed TLC.

for the 07 bikes manitou tride to get spesh to spec their forks and spesh said NO even when Manipou said we will give them to you.

now with Hayes taking over the reigns and are only looking at the mid to top end of the range things might get better.

Hmm, there was a conversation between some dudes with massive forks, then I engaged and asked something about oil damping and stuff but actually they had no clue what goes on inside the fork...

I understand half of it... Never seen a fork disassembled, and would like to talk with someone who knows all that stuff! Any good in-depth links maybe?

However, back in 1998 when I first started riding, Manitou forks were considered somewhat legendary among the riders... Like, something shrouded in mist, unreachable, unlike MZ or RS...

To clip or not to clip, that is the question. Well its still for the reign. I want a 20mm hub so teh pike is a safe bet. But for less money and more ajustable not the IT one i can get a Nixon. What do you think?

I had a set of Manitou Blacks and they were flexy and notchy. They tended to stick then move when a big impact hit. This meant that over slightly rough terrain it was like riding a rigid, over big hits they movod OK. They deflected noticably during braking, and the bushings died very quickly as well. The SPV adjustment didn't seem to make the slightest bit of difference, no matter what I pressure I set it at. My Rock Shox Revelations were, well...... a revelation [:)].

This means you can get a good fork or a bad one, at a ratio of about 40% of getting a bad one. Its a gamble basically, you may get a good fork or a bad one, have you got enough money to risk it?

If your really interested in a Manitou, how about this one, half price for a 150mm fork, ideal length for a reign. Plus its at a local bike shop so you can easily take it back if theres problems. This bike shop is very good and offer good service.

The travis will be more like the Rock Shox Lyric and Fox 36, its designed for the same market. It will be heavier than a Nixon. but will be stronger and less flexy; should take more abuse.

I take it you cant afford air pikes then, that way you won't need a spring upgrade.
Have you tried ringing TFtuned and asked them for a price for the coil pikes? Tell them your weight and bike and they will sell you the forks already set up for you.

I own nixons and plan to change them to pikes sooner rather then later, what does that tell you? To be fair the only problem I have had with my nixons has been the IT mech, everything else about them has been good so if you avoid those that use IT you could be fine but is it worht the risk to save a few quid? I wouldn't get Manitous if I was you, nothing to do with them being crap or good but due to the lack of aftermarket support at the moment for manitou. You could be one of the lucky ones and get a great fork but what if you don't and get one from a dodgy batch, with no aftersale support at the moment you will be stuck.

Just to add. If you are really serious about getting manitous ring TF tuned on 01373 826800 and speak to Neil, he is their manitou man and knows them inside out, he will be able to give you all the info you need about them.

I had a set of Axel Elites on a Giant XTC, absolute rubbish, flex was really bad and they bottomed out a lot - upgraded to Marzocchi MX Pro ETA and the difference in handling was huge. Much better forks.

Wouldnt buy Manotou again, have heard similar stories from other people I ride with

The travis look nice not flexy at all. I can't afford air pike i really got top get as low below œ300 as i can for the fork. I know my mind keeps changing but i am trying to explore all the posibilities. Anyone got any more coments? Or anyone know where to get soem cheap rs air pikes?

Right the fork makes over 50% of how the bike feels. get something that will compliment the frame not hold it back.

one final word from me. As yet i have not seen a Manipou fork i would consider buying.

And i have said in the past that i would never buy RS again but i now own 2 a reba and a revalation. Why did i buy them? because they (RS) got thier act together and now produce good forks.

That is true i want one but they are so expencive for me and i want soemthing that is good and has the ridgh spring in it. Anyone seen cheap rs pikes air? Did you used to use manitou?

I really need to try some out but there is not biek shopd near me that has either rs pikes or any manitou forks [:(] The travis forks looks good but that only on instinct. I woudl love to find some rs air pikes cheap but can't anyone seen any?

TFT still do manitou froks upto 06 without the IT thingy. I think pikes are the best way forwards it looks like but i seriously have no money [:(]
