If you are new to biking then the best idea is to go to your local bike shop and see whats in. A local shop can provide additional servicing to keep it optimum and if you need accessories you may be able to get thrown in for free.

Mongoose, Giant and GT are some of the manufacturers that make very good bikes at the œ300 level. Don't look at full suspension at this price as it will too heavy and won't perform well at all. The most important thing is to get a comfortable bike, but you may also want to add in some scope for growing as you will be growing quickly and don't want the bike to be too small in 6 months time.

    Hi and welcome

Personally I can recommend the Mongoose Tyax elite, my 13 yr old brother just got one (see pics), rated as the best sub œ300 bike around at the moment, will handle XC but also tough enough for more aggressive riding if you want.

List of some bikes worth looking at

The Mongoose Tyax Elite is the pick of the œ300 bunch.

Try as many out as possible to find the one that fits you & your riding style best.

It is the Specalized Hardrock Sport that he is on about, XLJosh is my son, i've asked him to do some research into new bikes as it's as we're going to use the bikes for family fun and excercise. I had a specialized Enduro pro years ago and have just bought a Stumpjumper comp so I like the brand!

Is this a decent starting point for an 11year old? Want something decent that he can keep a few years and upgrade as and when

  • Gt Aggressor XC3 16"(halfords exclusive) is one of the highest specced mountain bikes available for œ300, has a decent GT frame, shimano acera 24spd gearing, Rockshox dart forks, also has same wheelset as the œ550 GT XC1 double walled eyeletted with stainless steel spokes, tektro io disc brakes, and tioga tyres.

The specialized brand is well liked by younger riders, and would make a good base for upgrading. If you like the brand then its not a bad idea. The hardrock is also rock solid so will be able to take abuse if you decide to take biking to a more extreme level.

The stand out bike, i.e best for your money as previously mentioned is the Mongoose Tyax Elite. The Spesh Hardrock is a fine enough bike, good frame, albeit heavier than some and as mentioned built tough enough for the more extreme side of XC. The GT Avalanche 3.0 is an XC Bike, good frame from GT, worth upgrading on, but also more than enough for a beginner
