there have been a few plastic bikes. and you could class carbon bikes as plastic due to the resin.

Many manufacturers do make plastic bikes... because as Nicklouse said, carbon fibre is essentially a plastic.

Carbon fibre is entirely plastic, the resin is MDI based and the fibre is just strands of kevlar. Both of these are synthetic plastics.
Standard plastics wouldn't have sufficient rigidity for a given weight to be used in a bike and would cause excessive flex as the fibres are free flowing within the structure. Carbon fibre bonds the fibres to give a more rigid structure.

Not many though, who ever needed a chem eng to do home renovations etc. I have worked in plastic intermediates all my career and currently make intermediates for MDI, hence actually knowing about the subject. Sad, buts its one question I can answer quite well [:)]

Don't worry, carbon fibre is a very expensive plastic; unlike standard plastic which will only cost a few pence to make. Carbon Fibre is a bugger to make and uses some seriously nasty chemicals to make it.

Meh... where would we be if there wasn't someone here to tell us all about carbon fibre?
Probably all out talking about our rusty steel bikes I suppose [:D]

They must have been awful bikes, I really can't see normal plastic cutting it. I wouldn't like a fibre glass bike; when I was into kayaking I always remember seeing dead fibre glass boats at the side of rivers. One hit in the wrong place and it fails catestrophicaly.
