Avon Skin So Soft definitely works with the Scottish midges. Nice smell too! (the spray that is, not the midges.

I must be naturally repellent, as I never seem to suffer with insect bites....

Just bought some of the Jungle stuff last weekend (from Boots...about œ6), not had the chance to try it yet so can't comment......helpful eh![:D] The evening rides you really do get eaten..
Someone at work mentioned the Avon stuff, he's got a house somewhere in the hebrides and he swears by it....0 -
A word of warning with that jungle formula, it contains high levels of DEET which is nasty stuff, don't get it anywhere near anything plastic, especially your very expensive goretex jacket etc.

I heard a rumour that they don't like Marmite!
No, not spread on your legs, well, maybe....
I think it's something to do with the vitamins or the yeast, can't quite remember.
Maybe that's why I don't get bitten, I usually have Marmite on toast & porridge with honey before a ride!

Well, we dont get "Avon calling" round our way, most of the women look like they wear war paint, and not makeup. I seen some chasing off debt collectors. Trying to describe a lot of the female contingent and remember a certain cartoon in Viz? Very accurate![:D]
Common consensus seem to be Jungle formula, so I'll give that a go.
Just been counting the bites-29 left leg, 37 right leg and my arms have over 10 each plus bites on my neck ears and face. AAARRRRGGGHHHHHHH cant stop scratching! Its driving me up the wall!

The reason the army use the Avon stuff as insect repellant is the army issue insect repellant seems to attract mozzies! The only parts of you which are protected are those which are smothered in camouflage cream (which of course end up spotty).

Anything with 50% DEET is effective and supposed to be applied directly to the skin. 100% DEET is for treating clothes only, and should NOT be used on the skin.
It's not particularly friendly stuff, and clinical testing has shown that people can develope skin problems amongst other things when using the 50%. I've used it in jungles for extended periods of time (before reading anything about the clinical tests) and had no problems, which is strange because my skin is notoriously touchy. The wrong shower gel and I come out in a rash.0 -
Not got the bruised ribs, but have broken a couple last year OOOOWWWWW!!!!! I do have a sore knee after Thursdays ride, and I'm desperately trying not to scratch the bites....... and not really succeeding....

i use Autan (from boots, superdrug etc). tried jungle formula, don't rate it as highly. it works most of the time, but not all. i've been in mosquito infested places with autan on and never been bitten once. swear by it. bikeybikey0

Assuming this isn't a ploy because you work for Avon, would you be so kind as to point out which one it is on the Avon site? There are to many Skin so Soft products...

Only one fragrance of skin so soft has any effect because it includes citronella. I've read about it in MTB magazines and climbing magazines. However, I tried it at 10 under the Ben last year and at the end of the first lap, I had about 40 bites on each shin/calf. I used Expedition Systems 50% DEET after that and got no more.
DEET is nasty stuff and should only be used as a last resort but it is incredibly effective.
For skin so soft details see http://www.avon.uk.com/PRSuite/cafe/ask ... =1&item=15

If you can get it over here try Bush Mans it's an Aussie brand, but hell it works, It saved my skin when we were camping up in the tropics.
If not anything with a strong DEET 50%, but as already mentioned it does have a habit of wrecking clothing.

would agree with the marmite comment, also a curry the night before they hate garlic and spicess, plus some wind power helps too!! also avold banana's as they help attract the midges!!
ride it hard and keep it fun!!!
