Too many gears ?

I bought a GT Agressor XC 1.0 recently and although the bike in general is good, the gears seem to have a mind of their own.
On my 1992 21 speed GT Tequesta the gears would jump/slip once in a while, usually uphill under heavy pedal pressure, but my new Agressor is awful. The gears jump/slip all the time, even on the slightest incline. I haven't taken the bike back yet, but will. Just wondered if anyone else has suffered this problem with any MTB with 21 gears +.
Is it just adjustment or too many cogs ?
Help please ?

It's cable stretch, nothing to do with how many gears you have, have a look on Park tools website for repair tips and how to adjust the rear mech.

Have you taken it back for your service yet?
Usually this kind of thing is altered on your 6week free service.

MMM sounds like it not been set/built up right
Thats not normal esp if it's quite new
check indexing is correct at the shifters (most likely)
check for stiff links in the chain
check rear cassette rings are not moving lateraly

It is annoying, but cable stretch happens, simple fix though.
I'd take it back for it's free service.
But it's always good to DIY just incase anything happens on the trails,
A couple of good resources for repairs:
1) Park Tools Repair
2) Zinn & the art of MTB maintenance

I think you may be right about the Halfords set up (or lack of it) I didn't even get a manual or paperwork with it, just a receipt.
I also asked him to make sure i didn't get the bike which was on display, but amazingly when i picked up my bike a week later the display model had disappeared Hmm ?
Oh well we live and learn, as long as it's adjustable and can be put right. I guess i could take it to another bike shop that cares a bit more.
I'll give the links a look.
Thanks a lot0 -
If you fancy a trek, The Bike Hub here in Telford (well, Jackfield in Ironbridge) is fantastic. The owner, Peter, actually cares about what he's doing and is a consummate professional. Slightly eccentric, but I think anyone who enjoys fettling bikes all day would have to be!0
