Car racks and full suss

Travelling home yesterday I had my rig mounted to the car rack, one of those jobbies that mounts on a tow bar, and tied it to the rack with rope also. Doing 80 down the motorway and some lorry starts flashing me. Look in the rear view mirror and realise I cant see one side of the bike..crap!
Got out and it had dropped off of one of the sides and the rear wheel was hanging an inch from the tarmac...thankyou mr lorry driver.
I also have a rack that straps to the boot, but its not really much better. I ride a spesh fsr, so the shock sits just under the top tube and is completely in the way. I have to mount the bike on the shock, which I dont like doing, but I cant see any other way. How do others mount theirs?

I have a tow bar mounted rack that the bikes sit on. You strap the wheels to the rack.

A false crossbar is what you need. I use this one, but there are prob. others available.

Lucky!
My form tutor (has a SC Nomad) had his bike on his mates bike rack, pretty much same thing, but it did scrape along the motorway... Wrecked the tire and rim...
