Is it just me who finds the first climb on the black from the road next to the cafe absolutely lung busting?

i dont do it.find it a bit dull so i usually go upto the toll and off left through a field where you rejoin the track.

I do that climb and yes it a knacker the corner is teh worst where it just gets steeper and turns [:(] good when you get to the top though [:D]

Well my vision has usually gone funny by the time the track starts to widen out a bit, so I just imagine I'm in the alps.

No, I do too, it's a real nasty climb to do right at the start of the trail.

Hamsterley's good and there's lots of riding to be had there, but it's chuffin horrible to ride when it's wet and boggy. Given the choice I'd always prefer to go to the likes of Blanchland or thereabouts (although it has to be said, the cafe at Hamsterley do the most amazing tuna melt in the known universe!).

Its not that bad wet i rode it in teh pooring rain once the roots were abit slippy but if you got the right tyres its fine [:D]

Yup some maxxis swampthings super tacky stick to everything but roll about as fast as a slouth (sp?) [:(] and i still well flying into the bank after teh third jump on the skills loop [:(] but good every where else [:p]

They are mint i don't botehr with teh first 2 i use them to gain speed for teh monster last one [^] I also loved the drops untill i buckeled my wheel landing at the bottom flat bit on the second one [:(] bit much speed me thinks [:I]

Hamsterley isn't really a bona fide trail centre though, a lot of the black route looks like normal forest trails that they've just designated as the route. The only really trail centre-y bit about it for me is the skills loop.

Where is has been eroded - and some bits are very eroded - it's quite technical.

The black isn't really difficult... There are technical bits on it and they've added a few rocks here and there to make the trail a bit more technical but I wouldn't say it's any more difficult than say the Glentress red route.

anyway the shorter version.....its more difficult that glentress red but very different.There are few if any areas to pick up speed in Hamsterley.....Apart from the "outer" areas Dunk keeps hinting at.Basically the best of it is not on the map

I remember doing exactly the same route years ago, and then suddenly it became the black route so it is kinda 'old skool'.
