Bottom Bracket Help
I have noticed that there is quite a bit of play with my bottom bracket. If i hold the cranks there is lateral movement towards and away from the bike.
Is the bottom bracket something i can replace myself or is it something my LBS will have to do?
If it helps i ride a Giant Reign 2 2006 with a race face X type BB
I have heard various things about them been sealed units and that there is no need to go into them ever until they need replacing.
Does this sound like a problem that warrants a replacement at this stage, and if so can i do it myself?

prone to wear those B/B.
i'd bet a lot of money the B/B needs replacing.

œ40ish for the B/B is it easy to change?0

Fozzy,
I've got a Race Face BB/Chainset combo on my bike and whilst it's fine at the moment, when it inevitably gives up the ghost is it possible to install a better quality BB, but keep the Race Face chainset?

you can get phill woods bearings for the X Type B/B. This IS the better option rather than getting a different B/B etc.

yes but you may need to use a bb spacer as the cups/bearings are different widths.

There's an add for a German company in this months WhatMTB that does X-Type BBs with ceramic bearings - they might last longer...

I've wrecked 4 sets of Race Face X type BB bearings in 18 months of rding. They seem to last about 150-200 miles. Pathetic given that the reason for the external bearings was an increase in the size of the bearing which should increase lifespan.
All external bearing type cranks seem to have the same problem. As soon as I can afford it I'm going back to square taper which have always lasted for years on my bikes.
Will look into Phil Woods bearings. Just a thought but can you fit SKF bearings, presuming you can get the size, into the X Type cups?0
