Really?? Damn! Was planning a trip there soon with it being the closest forest "trail" to me [:(]

Did you try all the routes?

  • It's not too far from where I am and as a newby MTB'er am a little disappointed. Same as Satchmo245 I was hoping it'd be a bit more challenging than fire trails.

Still, I'd heard there are side trails where you can go off the beaten track and improv some fun.

Which route(s) did you go on fhiyll?

Well we followed all the marked trails, a local said there were a few 'bits' in the forrest but even he siged and said it wasn't very good.

Took me about 45mins from Bury to get there, spending the extra 20mins in the car gets you to llandegla, no competition really. Even Ramsbottom has better rides by far!!

Btw did the north face trail ages ago at grizdale and wasnt impressed by that either, just incase u looked at a map for the next nearest trail!
    Where you from?

I'm in Burnley but I don't have transport, apart from my bike [;)], so I need places on the rail network. Been wanting to go Dalby for a while so will have to sort out a Sunday there soon. I am still a noob but I like jumping in at the deep end (best way to learn).

Where have you been that you liked?

LLandegla is great, has all graded, waymarked trails. Theres a visitors centre there and a jet wash for your bike too.
Marin trail is great in code-y-brennin, theres a trainstation nr there!
    Penmachno is very good too.
Dalby is good if you like XC (was œ7 to get in teh car park).
But i think Glentress and nr by Innerlethan is the best in my opinion.
Glentress has long sweeping trails of all difficulties, a good visitors centrand shop and a freeride park. They added a bit of northshore recently too, its only about 3ft off the ground so its good fun and not a masssive punishment if it goes wrong.

    Have you any suggestions?

Theres a shop called ride on near by to you (i think), they do wednesday night rides, might be worth hooking up with those boys, good set of lads.

  • Living just south of Lancaster, I was kind of hoping that there'd be somewhere closer than the mega places you mention fhiyll? You know, somewhere on the relative doorstep where I could get to in an evening without having to drive for an hour+ :) Don't ask for much do I :)

Grizedale's 40 miles or so away so I guess that's the closest rated place. Gisburn was a real hope for me fhiyll so your review has put a dampener on that one :)

For me Llandegla is 100miles, Dalby 140m, Penmachno 130m, Glentress 150m so I guess they're more special trip kind of venues eh.

What do people think to bridleways?

I love them. I am quite lucky though living just a short ride from the Pennine Bridleway. I recently did the Mary Towneley loop which is a 47 mile loop in the Pennine Bridleway around my area and to be honest alot of the stuff on that loop was quite tricky! Some very technical stuff and some balls out fast scary downhill sections with drain barriers that you can jump! Obviously, for every downhill you pay with a painful uphil slog but it's worth it! Definately should give the MTL a go if you are in the area. I'm sure the Pennine Bridleway stretches up your way too. Some very good riding to be had in my experience.

Gisburn Forest istn't like Grizedale or Llandegla,, so you can't really compare it to 'trail centres' like these as it's aimed at family cyclists.

As for bridleways, well they are then main stay of off-road cycling in England and Wales. Red Panda, you should really check out many of the bridleways in the Lakes, or may be try and hook-up with a club like Bogtrotters, who'll be able to show you the best cycling in the North West.

Hey fhiyll, all I have really done is Bridleways so I can't recommend anything but them I guess. Not heard of that shop but I will definately have a gander, see if I can track it down. I know there is a riding club near me in Worsthorne but I have no idea how to get in touch. Going on a ride next Saturday organised by the Countryside Agency (Bridleways again) so hopefully I can meet some local riders there.

Definately want to go to some of the trails you recommend, I'm more than happy to slum it on the train to get there.

    Cheers

Speaking to a mate at work and he says there is a forest in Wiswell thats really good fun. It's 2 miles South of Clitheroe. Going to give that a go in the next couple of weeks I think.

What about Longridge Fell (aka Kemble) to the north of Clitheroe? I know the Bogtrotters go up there (see photos). Might be worth exploring?
  • I talked with some local MTB'ers over the weekend and they basically repeated the same suggestions as on this thread. Although one guy did mention a Roman road, which turned out to be the Salter Fell Track (Pics a bit dark) between Slaidburn and Wray. Slaidburn is very close to Gisburn Forest so I guess I could take my pick on how I felt on the day eh. I also found this Link which seems to have most of the recognised Lancashire MTB areas listed although Beacon Fell Country Park looks very small.

The Mary Towneley Loop looks very tempting indeed Satchmo. Nearer to me is the Salter Fell Track so I might try that first I guess [:)]

Thanks for the Bogtrotter's link Gregsd, I'm still getting to grips with my fitness and wonder if I group trip would be a good idea...fitness being the issue for me. Looks like a fun crew though [:)]

Here's a link to a brochure (it's 6MB so forget it if you're on dialup) with a fair bit of info about different MTB routes in Lancashire and the Pennines. I hope it might people some ideas for their trips? [:)]

Red Panda - Have a look at MTB Cumbria for some routes in the South Lakes, which should be easy to get too from Lancaster. They're all based on bridleways but there is some technical riding in the Lakes[:D]
  • Cheers for the link Greg I'll check out the routes for sure [:)] The MTB Cumbria site's very good isn't it.
