Coed Llandegla by train, anyone?

I've yet to visit any proper trails and I'm concerned that I'm going to have to buy a road bike if I don't hit a trail fairly soon!

I don't drive, so to get anywhere I've either got to beg a lift (not easy with a bike) or catch a train.

As Coed Llandegla is only 7 miles outside of Wrexham (fair enough, 7 uphill miles) I thought it would be worth a visit. Only, I'm a billy-no-mates when it comes to knowing folks with bikes. Does anyone fancy a train trip on June 16th? I'm an utter novice when it comes to trail riding, so I could do with a few tips [:I]

I also have no sense of direction, so if I could buddy up with someone who knows their way around, it would be kinda handy [8D]

You could buy some mates by bribing them with 2 week old mouldy flapjacks!![;)] LOL!

  • It's a real uphill 7 miles too. When I used to live in Wrexham I'd either drive up or get someone to drop me off, uplift-style, and ride back down. Sod riding up that on a fat-tyred mtb, I've seen roadies getting off and pushing up.

I wouldn't fancy riding those 7 miles. It's all uphill. It seems ok in the car but I wouldn't like to ride it.

Re: finding your way round at Llandegla- it's dead simple - all sign posted clearly and you can get a free map from the visitor centre, plus it's a friendly place so don't be afraid to ask.

Bother. It's never easy, is it?!

I might go and investigate it tomorrow. Maybe. Except I will probably be too lazy. *sigh*

    Someone please invent teleportation already.

Depending on cash flow you could always get a taxi from train station to llandegla... cant see it being more than a 10 spot!

Cash flow is tight. Very tight. Until the end of the month, at least. Even then, I'm supposed to finally take the plunge and learn to drive, which is going to cost plenty plenty.

I've spent œ200+ on bike bits this month (virtually all my expendable income). Chainrings, chain, cassette, bottom bracket, spare KMC missing links, can of GT85 and finish line lube.

Oh, I almost forgot, I've to spend œ90 on a helmet next month as well so that I can hit some trails and not have to ride like I'm made of glass.

Anyone want to buy a kidney? Actually, I have a pair of Technics SL1200 MK2's for sale, for any budding DJ's out there... œ400 ;)

Stefan, did you make it there via train?

mtb rider (I think) had a feature last month about trails accessible by train. It was actually worth reading

I read the same/similar article. I didn't go in the end. I did Shrewsbury->Telford (route 81) via Hadley instead (approx 15-20 miles from door to door, I reckon). Longest no-stops ride I've ever done. Beautiful countryside (mostly) but obviously not as exciting as Llandegla would be.

When I get my helmet, I'll definitely be going. Mate of mine wants to go and he's going to give me a lift. We may have kids in tow though, so nothing too extreme will be attempted!

Is it an issue still for sale as sounds like something i would need to read only having a bike license.

  • Hmmm, whats it like going home from LLandegla by train? Is it downhill all the way to the station?
And which station would you want to do to, I think theres a couple in Wrexham?

Just thinking if parents give me a lift there and then I get train back home...

  • i think i am going to try to get the train to llandegla some time with my friends, is the 7 mile ride from the station really bad, also is there not and easier way to get there other than going up that hill,[?][V]

feel free to add me if you have got msn,
  • ....on a side note if anyone could scan the article it would be super fantastic as i dont think i can get mbr if its last months issue.

  • It's downhill from Llandegla to either of the two stations in Wrexham. Fast enough to have to brake when behind cars on some bits, not too hard to hit a real 40mph on the big dipper, going back won't take much more than half an hour max.

  • He could always get the train through on the morning of the ride though and we could pick him up from the station.

I'm all up for the idea of getting the train and meeting at Wrexham station!

I may have to invest in knee and elbow pads if I try to keep up with you lot on the trails though! I've not been proper trail riding yet and I'm still far too cautious on the bike. Poor skills [:(]

    Thanks guys [:)]

  • Anyone who's been out riding with me knows I hate the thought of someone missing out due to lack of transport, we can arrange something closer to the time [:)]
