20lb bike?
I have to say, my Zaskar is getting more and more ride time. I actually prefer riding it to my Enduro.
current weight it a smidge under 24lbs and I'd like to aim (long term project) for 20lb.
So I'll be looking for some light wheels at around œ100 mark and I guess they'll be a set from Merlin as the amount of decent reviews from people here is far more than any other wheel maker I can think of.
So, what else? I'm not quite at the point where I'll be replacing all my bolts for ti ones, but it may come to that. Other future upgrades will be a new seat post, stem and bars. As the bike's not really used off road at all, I'm thinking, carbon. Ooh I love that word.
First thing I've ordered (not for weight saving though) is some Flyling Snake gear and brake cables. Anyone got any suggestions on the wheels?

For cheap and lightish wheels for a nundred have a looky at Mavic Crossrides. While Merlin certainly get a lot of good press for their wheels, for a custom build you'd have a bloody hard time beating the quality of a pair from TwoWheels in Amblecote.
You could loose a load of weight by going single speed too [:p] tee hee

p'soff!!!! i'd rather go sturmney archer. hehe
y'know, i need to get up to 2 wheels cos i've not been since the shop moved (yeah, its been 15 years or so since my last visit!)
i have crossrides on my enduro actually. actually quite impressed with them but wondered if there was anything lighter around the same price, or would i really just be sacrificing quality and strength?

Can't find owt factory built any lighter for a similar price. The LX wheelset that Merlin do are quite a bit heavier. The Bontrager Select set that I nicked off the wife for me Inbred (she has Crossrides) are heavier too. Don't know how a hundred quid's worth of custom build with Shimano hubs would come out weight-wise.

XT on 717 are slightly heavier, but IMHO the better wheel when built by the likes of merlin. Stronger, better hubs and should last a lot longer. You'd have to spend 200+ to seriously get the weight down.
On my Zaskar I have a 125g Kooka race stem, 200g seatpin, Crossmax, XT/XTR, Skarabs and am about at 22-23lbs.

If you don't ride it off-road then it's probably going to be easier to get a road bike.0

You could get a rigid fork...

i dont like riding road bikes, merely because i can only go on road with them, and i dont like the position i have to ride in. plus, i do like the fact that a mtb set up for roads can still be used for tracks if i swtich tyres. besides, i cant get rid of the zaskar, it's a classic.
sonic - i dont need uber strength for the wheels, just light and cheap.... tbh, im happy with crossrides, i may as well get another set.
ride_whenever - i already have rigid forks on there.
