Stainless steel vs Titanium watch

My bro wants a really good watch so he asked me for advice and so I'm asking you! [:D]
What's the difference between the two? The Ti watch should be twice as light and not corrode at all, right? A bit more expensive though...
Steel
Titanium
I hope it will last him a lifetime, considering how much it costs! [:D]
<font size="1">To clip or not to clip, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind of men to suffer the dings and contusions of unclipp'd riding, or to bind thy feet against a sea of gnarly singletrack and by these contraptions, ride o'er them with ease. To clip... to slip no more, and by clipping to end the buttache and the thousand natural shocks that ryders are heir to; tis a consummation devoutly to be honed. No clip - to slip perchance to be thrashed most heinously...</font id="size1">

My bros got a really nice dark blue titanium watch, and wow, its light!
But I couldnt justify spending that amount of money (think his cost œ250, and thats not even that much for a watch), I think my œ40 Adidas is more than enough œ!

Personally I prefer the look of the stainless steel one with the steel coloured face.
As for the difference I have no idea which 'technically' would be best.

I collect watches, and while Ti is lighter, it also depends on the overall design of the watch (and strap). I have an Animal Ti watch, its huge, and very heavy! But very nice. Also its good for allergy sufferers and those with sensitive skin (if the back is Ti too)

I have 2 stainless steel watches and neither have corroded despite wearing both during various sweaty activities and going to the beach with them on. I love titanium jewellery, but can't find the justification in doubling or tripling the price for the different metal when steel is more than good enough

It's 310 vs 355 GBP. I told him to go all the way for the titanium, if he's buying a watch that he'll use for many years.
Regarding me, I have my trusty Casio for 9 years, and it's still going strong! Don't need another one at all...

Titainium doesn't offer any increase in corrosion allowance than a good 316 or 304 stainless steel and actually has less resistance than very high grade stainless; its main advantage is its ability to retain strength over 500DegC; which isn't relevant for a watch.
I have a fantastic Breitling watch and thats made from stainless steel and hasn't shown any sign of corrosion and still loooks great. Stainless steel has a bright appearance thats easy to polish up, titainium has a grey dull finish and doesn't polish up as much.
The important bit is the glass IMO, cheap glass scratches easily and looks naff, try and find one with a sapphire crystal glass, i've accidently smacked by breitling into steel and concrete and the glass hasn;t even scratched. The sapphire glass also has a really smart blue tinge.

I have a stainless steel sekonda. hasn't rusted or scratched. titanium DOES scratch though, but it kind of adds to the look of it. i have a ti ring (ooer, call me robot aphex!) which has scratched but it still looks lovely. so much so, my wedding band is being made up with ti and red gold. only problem is, it's nigh on impossible to get any alterations done to it if i suddendly develope "pikey" fingers hahahaha.... oh well, no more pies for me.

thats the nature of ti though. the more scratched it gets, the better it will look. it just looks bad when you get your first few on there. after a while you wont care.

I have a ti Seiko watch. Its very light which is the most importatant thing for me. However, a good stainless looks better in my opinion. I think ti scatches easily too.

Like sonic I also used to collect watches until I suddenly became highly allergic to metal on my wrists.
[:(]
Unfortunately I've never liked titanium watches. I once had a ti Breitling but sold it.
If I can ever stop buying upgrades for my bike I'll get a tag heuer carrera with a calf skin leather strap and a glass back.

Ti is very good for the increasing number of people who have skin sensitivities nowadays. Seagull makes a good point about the glass: many of mine are mineral glass or saphire crystal and they just don't scratch.
I want an Omega Seamaster.

I've had a Mont Blanc watch with Sphire crystal glass worn every day for over a year and there's not a mark on it. Previous watches only ever lasted a couple of weeks at work before picking up a knock or a scratch. Funny that I spent years buying cheap watches to wear at work and what I really needed was a more expensive one [:0]

I'm quite happy with my œ90 Timberland watch. I've ended up hugging a tree, knocked it on walls, it's gone through bushes etc on tight singletrack and not a mark. Same with my steel Accurist and steel Adidas thing. My Ti ring however has scratches all over it

They are very nice. I bought a Tag Heuer Aquaracer last summer which is very similar to both the Seamaster and the Submariner. Unfortunately that was when I discovered my skin condition. I'd worn stainless steel straps for years previously - stopped when I broke my wrist, as my other SS watch needed adjusting as my wrist size grew after the bolts were put in, and then found that I couldn't wear anything with the slightest hint of nickel content.
Had to sell the watch in the end. I'm saving my other steel watch to give to my son when he's old enough as he seems to have inherited my fascination with watches (except he points at my watch and shouts 'clock' which unfortunately sounds like '*****').

i have had an Omega Seamaster Pro since 1988 and it is steel. in that time i have had to replace the strap once when the pivot pins were that worn it was the only thing to do. not that cheap a job. i dont want to think about the cost if it was Ti.

Was the problem with the steel watch an itchy red rash that raised slightly off the skin? I had one of these and found it wasn't an allergic reaction but a fungal infection caused by water getting trapped between the metal and the skin. I used a standard anti-fungal cream for althletes foot (Daktarin I think) and this cleared it in about 4 days and it hasn't returned. The rash lasted for months before I worked out what it was.
my photos NYM biking routes My full Suss My Hardtail0 -
It was a bit worse than that. It was like lumps of skin were coming off.
Went to the doctor and was told I just can't wear watches. I just wear a G Shock at the moment and its ok - I do get the rash that you mention as well, but just stop wearing the watch for a couple of days if it comes up.

I can't wear watches because i get eczma on my wrist, so i count. As for Ti keep strength above 500 celcius and not needing that in a watch, well you might not, but i definately do.

Not having a pop at anyone but why buy an expensive watch that is designed for a specific purpose but not use it for that? Isn't it a bit like buying an expensive mountain bike to cycle to the corner shop?
Like I said not, having a pop, just interested why the fasciniation in these watches. [:)]

A nice watch lasts for ages and its good to wear something special. I don't wear any other jewellry so why not have a nice watch. I always wanted a nice watch so why not get one if you have the money.
Ride Whenever - you must do strange things with your watch [:)]. However, I suspect whilst the metal structure won't fail at 500degC, the internals may go a bit funny.

I've always had stainless steel watches, and have a couple of tissots myself. Steel, waterproof, saphire glass = Indestructible! Have had the actual one for 3 years and it only needs a bit of polish to be as new.

Steel might be heavier, but you soon get used to it. It took me a while to get used to wearing a watch with a leather strap again after wearing a steel bracelet watch.... I kept thinking I'd forgotten my watch. I love the look and feel of a steel watch personally

Waterproof means bugger all mate, wouldn't take anything rated under 200m to 30m as it won't work afterwards.
