I have just mangled two teeth on the big ring
My question it Can I replace the Truvative firex big ring with another type or does it have to be like for like.

as long as the bolt pattern is the same and the number of teeth the same it is a straight swap.

Indeed, go for Middleburn if you can (Chain Reaction Cycles have an almost full selection). It is debatable whether it's worth the extra for the hardcoat versions, I've done less than 50 miles with them and the coating has just started to come off the teeth. Excellent rings though, my drivetrain and gear changes have never been so smooth [:)]
