New wheels & brakes

Sorry if I already touched some of this in a previous post, but I thought I would summarize my position in a new post to save some time and gain focus.

I am not getting along with my Juicy's and fancy a new set of light XC wheels too, so am after options and hopefully a bargain. Current set up in my bike is mavic XM117 wheels on deore hubs, Juicy 5's, LX shifter, deore front mech, XT rear mech and Triuvati Firex chainset.

Option A) New XT groupset kit from Merlin at œ450. Sell all my stuff to riding buddy and girlfriend for around œ200 I guess, as it is almost new. Dual control levers worth the hassle?

Option

Get some XC/717's and XT or hope mini brakes. Just replace deore front mech from deore to LX to match shifters.

I think the main question is: Is the move to XT worth it? And how easy will it be to install? My mate is very good at this, and part of the deal when selling him my stuff is for him to teach me how to do all this [;)].

again, sorry if you have already answered in the "general" section, but any opinions are welcome as I am a bit confused...

I would personally buy the xt groupset with shifters not dcl, and buy some hope brakes, such lovely modulation. Get some good wheels too.

Hhhm, managed to calm down the upgrade bug for a while, but had to promisse wheels and brakes, which are the ones buggering me the most. What is the difference between splined hubs and 6 bolt ones?

Wheels: Thinking of getting XT hubs with either 717 or DT 4.2 rims.

Brakes: Shimano XT or Hope mini

Also, what exactly is a floating rotor? And braided hoses?
Will get a front LX mech, but will replace the rest when it wears out me thinks...

Yeh xt hubs on xc717's will be nice and light also i would get the minis if poss but teh xt's ahve a bit more power. Your choise.

Floating rotors are pointless marketing hype and pretty bike bling. Braided hose give better lever feel and are certainly worth the money. They are also slightly more resilient. I love my mini's and 180mm up front stops me fine. 717 on xt will be really nice wheels, if a little more maintenance heavy. Look at the hope kit on merlin, really nice.

Uhm, it seems Hope only fits 6 bolt hubs and XT only slined hubs... Is there any effective difference in performance?

I think it has come down to these two options:

A) XC/Mavic 717 wheels with hope minis for œ300 from Merlin

XC/DT 4.2 wheels with shimano XTs for œ250 from Merlin too
