Juicy 5's Vs. Shimano LX/XT

Got œ150 to spend on a set of hydro-dics, looking at Juicy 5's, or Shimano LX/XT. Which offers the most bang for the buck? Are the XTs worth opting for over the LXs?
Advice and any other reccomendations welcome!

I would get lx or xt they are better and seem not to drag as much as avid.

i'd say that avid probably have better modulation, but shimano are easier to maintain. bikeybikey0

I've got the baby Juicy 3's - I don't like them but unfortunately they are way down the list of upgrades I've promised my bike I'll buy for him. Previously had LX equivalents which were tops - guess XT is going to be even better?

I'm very happy with my 5's. Power is great, no squeeling, easy to adjust..... perfect really. If you wait til sept though the new XT brakes will be out which are meant to be 20% more powerful than the current XTR so will definately be worth the investment

I dont know if this can help you (sorry if it doenst)...try to email them and ask if they would post to the UK...but they have some good prices (in euros 1pound = 1.34 eur)...and as soon as the new 08 XT models come out, the prices will go down even more...

I've got 04 Deore 555s, and 06 Juicy 5s The Juicys have far more modulation than the Shimano but I've had major problems with the pistons not retracting and the seals being rubbish.
whenver the pads have needed changing, I've had to open the system to push the pistons back in, and them I've had to bleed them. The bladder blew on one as well, causing me a few weeks of being brakeless.
Coincidentally, I bought a Deore cable disc to see me through, and the feel on that was identical to the hydraulic Shimanos. They're very on/off - if I only judged my brakes on their performance and not reliability, the Avids win hands down.

Ups...Yeah...you are right...sorry.
Which means it would be even better if that shop would post to the U.K.
Sometimes they have great deals...a few weeks ago they had a lot of XTs and XTRs for a very good price...i guess they were trying to get rid of the stock for the new models...

I have hope mini mono's and LX's, both with 180 front and 160 rear rotors, the LX's kick the arse of the hopes, but saying that, the mineral oil is supposed to boil easier than the DOT fluid in the hopes, so if you were doing a lot of riding in the Alps, then maybe the Mini's would be a better choice.
Hopes customer service is supposed to be superb as well

I run Hope Mini's on my bike back home, and I have Avids Juicy 7's on my Santa Cruz. I have also used my brother's Shimano XTs.
If you want lots of modulation, go for the Avids. I would say it is a close call between the XT's and Mini's in terms of modulation. IMO the Hopes are far more serviceable than the other two and therefore you should be able to get them set up the way you want.
If you want sheer bite and power, go for the XT's or Hopes. Having tried all three I would definitely NOT go for Avids again if I had the choice. I personally do not like the amount of modulation and I find them far harder to tune than my Hopes despite the fact that the the 7s have a pad adjuster!
I prefer the more immediate bite and power. OK, this bite might seem harsh when testing Hopes or Shimanos in the street, but once you are nailing down the hillsides that bite becomes far less noticable and means that you do not have to put as much travel into the levers before you get the power you want.
Go for Hopes! [:D] Or maybe Shimano....

I've been very impressed with the stopping power and modulation of my juicy ultimates, and my juicy sevens (before I broke them)
Trust me, I'm a doctor!
