leaking. hmm nope never. you have oil come from the oil sponges on the leg sometime it can put to much on but this is NOT an issue.
Reliability. hmm again never had an issue with any of my fox reliability (the rear shock YES but that is a situation known as stuck down, i have had that 3-4 times) but the only "issue" with fox forks are the bushes. initially they are tight but after a few months they bed in and you find some slack in the bushes, TFTuned are the guys who can dial this slack out expertly (as well as mojo but i find TF to do the job better i have helped to many people IMO, who have had forks and shocks returned from mojo with the same problem or worse).
you will have people going RS are better etc etc here. The RS are good forks no doubt but they can be fiddly to setup, the fox are easy as pump the main chamber and the rest is done for you, they are VERY stiff to, stiffer than reba's or tora's or revelations. The fact is your asking about Fox and the Fox are a good fork it's just the bushes that CAN let them down.

thanks fozzybear.
i'm a bit of a punter when it comes to forks as i've been a roadie for far too many years!
have a look at this:
http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/2006_front_ ... 5336.shtml
do you think the comments are fair/representative or just exceptional cases?
what do you think of the whole terralogic thing?
with regard to the bushes what is the deal with sorting these out should they become an issue?
cheers.0 -
firstly Fox literally upgrade their forks year on year. so most those reviews are not comparable to the 07 forks.
i do agree they are not the cheapest or represent the "best" value for money but i have 2 fox forks and the older ones are due to go back to TFTuned to be fettled soon (bushes need tweaking). i love them, plush and responsive and light weight.
something to consider.. thats based on the OLD teralogic system the new one is more plush.. TBH i don't like the teralogic system on my forks and i chose forks without the teralogic i would recommend you do the same. Some F80 RLC's would be a far better choice of fork and still have a platform lockout feature with IMO is a better option than the teralogic system. you can lockout the fork and with the compression adjust you can set the level of platform before the forks come active.. like i said it's a better option than the X series IMO.
bushes.. hmm after a few months they bed in, once bed'd in they need a tweak to tighten them back up once this is done you never have an issue again. most fox owners run them for a year, service them with TFTuned and never have a worry again.
they do it as part of a normal service no extra charge.

personally, i'd avoid fox. and most people i know who have had them who don't have money to burn do the same. as foz says, they do not represent value for money, and the amount of problems people seem to have with them compared to the other makes isn't good. and they don't tend to fix the problems for free either.
that said, when they work, they are great forks.
my talas RLC are on the commuter bike these days. they were originally œ600's worth. my pikes are the basic OEM air ones i have on my heckler, and they cost me œ150 and they've been superb in every way - completely out-class the talas. THAT is value for money. bikeybikey0 -
thanks again.
the bike i'm looking at is the trek 8900 2006, so this is why i'm enquiring as to the quality of these forks as it is these that come with the bike. the forks are the 06' model. i really like the bike but am concerned i might end up with a duff set of forks on it.0 -
i don't want to mislead you - fox are a good make of forks, they're just not always reliable in my experience, and expensive to fix. do you know if there is an alternative? bikeybikey0
-
no you won't end up with duff forks..
it will be fine. you will have a warentee with mojo too to cover them for problems.

if they come with the bike you like, go for it. i didn't mean to sound like they were poor quality - they make good forks, just can be expensive to fix if they go wrong. the probability is that you'll love them, and hopefully they'll behave themselves. [:)] bikeybikey0

my background is road racing. my style of riding is fast through woods and singletrack. i will look to begin racing some xc's (for fitness) so think this bike will fit my needs. am i making a mistake?0 -
nope the style will be long and low much like a XC bike.. just checking you were going in the right direction [:)]

Ok, so on the recurrent paranoid theme i wondered if you guys would agree that a 17.5" frame will be fine for me? i'm 5'7" but have long arms and an inside leg of 31". i reckon it'll be fine but can someone back me up!?
on road bikes i ride a 54cm comfortably and my stlye of off-raod riding will be XC and singletrack.0 -
yer 17.5 will be fine.
again your on a cross over from the small to medium sizes but if your a roady and like the stretched out feel then the slightly larger size will be ok.
i have an 18 and i'm 5'8 with a 32 leg.. if you stand over the bike you SHOULD have a few cm's clearence to the old fellas but as your the same size as me i personally think you will find a small too small and the medium a tad to large. i found i was better off with the medium.
