new bits

My Rocky Mountian has been playing up a bit recently so took it to the LBS, parts required and what I am replacing them with:

New Headset (Race Face Deus XC)
Possible new BB
New cables (Flying Snakes going on)
New chain rings (Race Face Race)
Brakes to be bled
Hubs to be serviced
Wheels trued

[:0]

So what I thought was going to be a quick œ35 service has turned into a well over œ100 new bits extravaganza....yeehaa, lots of new shiny things[:D]

I am also getting rid of my big chain ring and putting the Race face Bash guard back on (used to have it on my Scott)

These things never work out the way we intend! Can drop the price a bit if you fit some of the bits yourself of course.

Unfortunately I am not very good at "fettling" and the LBS guy is really good with me when it comes to fitting, if I buy from him he usually fits for free and he tries to get close to internet prices for most things so not to bad.

I would rather pay a bit more and trust the workmanship

i'm going the same way dave, bought some new Blackspire XTR chains and some kind fella here is turning the old Shimano ring on a steel lathe and making it into a bash guard for me and i now run a short cage mech.. no more thwachs on logs or stuttery shifts under load plus i just can put the powerlink back in with the extra 4 links of chain and put a ring back on and i have a road ring on the front... wish i could get a 36T blackspire for the front though. (i find i run out on 32/34 sometimes)

Yeah, I am switching to 36/24 at the front from the usual 44/32/22. I had a similar setup on the Scott and preferred it. I had broken a couple of the teeth off from the large and middle chain rings so hopefully this will improve things[:)]

I was considering something like this as I am quite a careless rider and I keep thwacking my big ring on various logs. My idea was to replace the middle ring with a 36T and turn the big ring on a lathe as a bash guard. However, I will soon have a kinesis maxlight XC 120 and I was wondering whether the makeshift bash guard would suit a bike like that?

Got my RM back this afternoon (after a rather mad Innerleithen trip on my HT)

Got all the new bits on it and it also got serviced...and it feels great. RF Deus headset and new RF BB, Race Face race rings and bash gaurd, brakes bled, hubs serviced, new gear cables and wheels trued. Took it out for a 5 min spin earlier tonight and it just felt so much better than it has recently.

Looking forward to getting out on it on Tuesday[:D]
