What wheels would you say are the ultimate XC wheels
(light, strong, stiff etc + I need a disc brake version)
At the moment I'm thinking 'Mavic Crossmax SL Disc.'

Thanks

Crossmax are very good, but not the ultimate IMHO. Mine would be a hand built pair, using Sapim CXray spokes and the Stans rims, laced onto Tunes top hubs.
Something along the likes of this:

I can vouch for CX-Ray spokes. Got a pair of XC wheels with them that I've ridden places like Witches Trail at Fort B and down the Berminator, Nessie etc with 97kg little old me on board they were absolutely fine. They are onto XC717 rims which are heavier than Stans (assume you were thinking Olympics, Sonic, because I think Stan does some heavier ones now).

I was offered a wheel with the tune hubs very cheap (about œ70 off) from my LBS, but read up that the tune hubs can be tight on the freewheel and have reliability issues. I got a Mavic Crossmax ST rear and its fantastic, prob upgrade the front at some point as well. Got it for less than CRC sell them as well. I considered a Chris King based setup but it would have cost too much.

Well after 8 weeks of waiting my Crossmax SLR's are finally in the country and should be with me by Friday!! [:D]
So I'll give a report after the weekend whitedragon101 after I've given them a hammering!

I've just ordered from Action Sports:
DT240s
Mavic717
Sapim CX-ray spokes
Brass nipples
I think they'll weigh in at about 1550/1600g.
Not the ultimate XC wheels - but good for the money I hope; œ320 inc p&p.

i have tune hubs ( lovely green colour) x-ray spokes and mavic rims ...very light and straight/true ...i had them built at http://www.starbike.com/.
martin the guy that runs the site is very helpful ..and very honest ...so if you say what type of surface you ride on , he'll tell you if the hubs n rims are right for you.
extralite hubs are very popular now also.. just as light as the tune hubs.

tune hubs ect.. ( ithink they have a front hub at 45grams now -haha insane!!)

Yep, i know of a couple of guys who have had nothing but trouble with Tune hubs. I think they look nice...........but the performance seems pretty iffy (especially given the price).Roadie

It does seem a lot when you consider that the couple of riders i'm speaking about are the only two with Tune out of our group, and both have had issues.
There has been a few posts on STW about them as well.
Personally, i'm on the fence, but based on what i've seen and heard, they seem a bit suspect. Maybe just coincidence that two rougue hubs ended up being bought by two guys who ride together???Roadie

I think any superlight hub is not going to be a sturdy as our Shimano friends, but there are a few types of Tune, is it one model in particular?
