So rear wheel came off.... while riding!

Pretty sure not a situation you get to read about all the time... happened to me yesterday on the trail. Was riding nicely through the grit and mud, the rear wheel jarred (thought: damn branch got in my spokes).
Stopped and couldn't believe my eyes: the rear derraileur had caught a spoke and turned upside down (if you can portray it). Looked at it and saw that the wheel had dislodged and the clamp was loose. How: only God knows... possibly had got shaken on my cycle carrier the day before and I never checked it.
Anyway, forced the derraileur back - all reasonably ok, but it rattled on gear change. Got home and discovered that the der. arm (which attaches to the frame) was slightly bent causing it to catch the spoke. So bent it back, all fine now - scary though! In almost 30 years of riding never had this happen.

Which makes me wonder: anyone else here who'd like to share their more out-of-the-ordinary incidents?

My mate rode so hard into a root submerged in a puddle that he went flying off forwards, the back of the bike flipped up and lodging itself in a tree by the derailleur, shearing off the mech hanger and ripping the gear cable out of the rear mech. That was quite a site. He actually came off landing perfectly up right leaving the bike behind... Lucky he pulled out of the SPDs in time otherwise it would have been a sight to behold... [:D]

Tut tut tut, riding Ho Chi Minh in those conditions! No wonder it a rut fest now. [:P]

My only personal breakage incident was landing a jump right into the full face of a rock slab at the trail edge, causing two punctures in tyres simultaneously and thus destroying both rims. [:D]

    Rule 64:

Cornering confidence generally increases with time and experience. This pattern continues until it falls sharply and suddenly.

  • I was riding along a road once, when suddenly the bike became really rough, ie it was hard to pedal and made a funny noise. Couldnt work out what it was, so stopped and my rear wheel was almost completly out :S

Bike : Marin Eldridge Grade 06
  • I was in north London riding down the hill which leads to the underground station hapsted, its on the left at the cross roads.

So im riding down when my left crank arm snapped clean off. I stopped the bike picked up the arm with pedal and looked back the guy behind me who was driing a Golf gti.

I looked at him and we both shook are heads as if to say, wtf man thats not ment to happen.

Chain snapped twice not close togther but its happend.

This is why I spent the extra on a hyperglide chain and I hopping to get proper pins for installation. I used to ride my bike pretty hard but now I just like to cruse, a few hills and a slow 25 miller and thats enough for me these days.

Worse situation I can think of is the chain snapping whilst leaning forward in a open road with lots of traffic and you just going over the front and a truck going over you.

    That can happen.

TAKE YOUR BIKE MAINTENCE SERIOUSLY GUYS, CHECK THE CRANK TIGHTNESS AFTER INSTALLATION, BEFORE A ROAD RIDE CHECK YOUR BASIC BIKE STATUS HAS SOME ONE LOSSENED YOUR BACK WHEEL WHILST YOU POPPED INTO THE SHOP.

Good luck every one enjoy your biking.

Had a cheap rear hub fail and by fail i fall to peices and spew barings all over the place, about 5 miles from home. Oh and it happened in the middle of traffic.

Still only had myself to blame, clearly on the way out as i had to keep tightening the cones every other day to make it rideable.

Wonder how many accidents could be avoided though propper mantiance and replacing parts when needed.
  • i done the same thing with my derileur a few times, but never had the wheel come outy, the other day on my way home i was jumping over some flags because they where on the pathment, and i was wondering why my from brake kept coming on, it was because the front wheel was loose and it was only just being held on by the little ring around the outside of the dropouts on the forks, lol,,, i was a little surprised to find this out. could have been nasty while i was jumping,

feel free to add me if you have got msn,
  • My rear wheel came out once not long ago and bent the disc rotor. I was on the outward part of my ride too so went out and back with terrible disc rub at the rear.

Blimey - that is close. Well, if you fancy a random meet up and ride, give me a shout anytime after Tuesday next week. I'll be back from home and in dire need of my leigh woods fix.

Have to say I'm quite new/crap, so no picnic bench!

Also have a look at the bristol forum for the cheesy rides if you want to explore more of leigh woods!

  • I came off on monday...

Was riding a narrow singletrack downhill into Bradwell (i think), I was dodging a thorn bush and my bar end on the other side got caught in some weird branch thingy, and I went flying off the bike. Luckilly managed to dive into the verge rather than the rough track though! I seem to have knackered my back and shoulder a bit and have quite a few grazes though, despite it not particularly hurting at the time.
