Ok, I've saved up my tokens from my yogurt pots for my two free trees. ( Yeo Valley yogurt) Cant decide on the trees though. You can get Rowan, Silver Birch, Hazel, Hawthorn,or Wild Cherry.
I'm thinking Silver Birch but how many years does it take for a Hazel tree to have nuts on it? Anyone know?

About 3 years if I remember rightly Saz, and Wild Cherry trees are lovely but they shed their blossoms like litter.
If it were me I'd go for a silver birch and a hazel [:)]

Hazel grows quick IIRC. I get hayfever from birches, so don't do that. Rowans are nice, see them on streets verges. But cherry, mmmm. Hawthorn too common, tangly messes.

Theres Hawthorn hedges all round here. They cut them every year and we all get punctures for WEEKS. Nightmare! Lot of birds here already( especially yellowhammers for some reason, huge squads of em!!). The Dawn Chorus is REALLY LOUD!!!
Yup, if its 3 years I'll go for Hazel. And a Silver Birch coz they're so pretty.[:D] Thanks Caz.

Silver birch are great, my uncle has an alley of them at his farm and it looks brilliant. The leaves look best in a light wind with the sun shining.

Can you trade them both in for something bigger, which you can eventually flog to IKEA for money to buy more yoghurt with?

Silver Birches are lovely trees and quick growing. They are also very free seeding which means they readily spring up everywhere. I used to pull them out in my flowerbeds as weeds.
Hazel is more of a shrub, but is valuable as a food source for Red squirrels.
Hawthorn is a useful tree/shrub, but as you pointed out most hedges are made up of it already.
Wild Cherry I can take or leave.
Rowan (often called Mountain Ash) is an attractive tree with delicat flowers in the spring followed by lots of red berries which birds love.
I would go for Hazel and Rowan. No Scots pine?

Didn't realise you were so David Bellamy, Nick!
Have you thought of doing guided botanical bike rides? (maybe a bit of a niche market though)

Hamish - I've been neglecting my Horticultural side since I have been staying in a flat. Hopefully if I get a house I can get back into my gardening. Very relaxing.
I dont think naturalistic mountain bike rides would be a good idea. You know what some rides are like already, stopping every 10 minutes! [;)]
