SOLVED: Fine tuning rear derailleur

Just wasted an hour trying to line up chain with cassette rings by turning the barrel adjuster on the mech. It wouldn't budge in the right direction so I pulled off the barrel adjuster, cleaned and lubed the thread, undid the cable bolt and cut off the cable end. Then I slipped off the fairly new cable outers, sprayed out the innards with WD40 before grease gunning it. Assembled the lot to discover it still didn't work. Then realised that my new bike has an XT mech whereas my old one has a Deore mech. Turning the XT adjuster clockwise takes the mech in towards the spokes while carrying out the exact same operation with the Deore adjuster takes the mech towards the dropout. The exact opposite effect. Forgot everything I'd read on rear mechs in this forum. Fool!
