I want the quality of XTR shifters but it seems this years offering the M970 don't have a display where as the M952 does.

The question is how old are these M952's and what is their shifting performance compared against the new M970's?
Thanks

Hard to say, as just one link in the ever improving chain of parts. The new ones are supposed to be quicker.

go for the ones without the display. i never use it, im sure most people dont either. the way i see it, if im pedalling my @rse off, then i could do with changing gear. if its too hard going, then i can down a gear.
that split second you look at the display, is the split second a car can pull out, or a barbed wire fence etc etc etc
