Extra 2"...is it too much?

Just bought off a friend an unused Spec comp disc, 2007 19". Just getting back into biking after 10 years and I bought a 19" which is the same as my old Diamondback. Ridden it a couple of time locally, nothing daunting and I am thinking its too big! When I stand astride the bike the bar is just touching my bits [:0] (so to speak). It is a great bike but I have this niggling feeling. Whats your thoughts?

Many an answer I had in mind when I saw the title...
All bikes are measured different ways, have differing geometries so can never say that two similarly sizes bikes are going to be the same. Usually you need 3 inch clearence oover the top bar. In your case, I would say its too big yes.

I would definitely say it's too big, as Rockhopper's have quite a low stand over height anyway really!

Yep, probably too big, unless you are more into XC business than going down hills...

I'd say a 19in Rocky is suitable for someone 5-9'- 5'10 and upwards.0

brighty - i'd say you were right. 19" is suitable for 6 foot-ers at the very very smallest. most blokes over 6ft i know ride mediums. bikeybikey0

I just had another ride on it just to make sure before I buy and I felt ok. I do have a 33" inside leg and long arms though, attractive eh! Can i just clarify something. As the top bar slops down towards the seat post is it there I need clearance or near the handlebars?
Thanks for your replies.Live for today, tomorrow you may be married!0 -
ideally, you should be able to stand astride your bike just in front of the saddle and be able to fit four fingers comfortably between your crotch and the top tube.
to give you an idea, i too am a lady, have a 31" inside leg and a 15" bike. but it all depends on what kind of riding you do, and what feels comfortable to you though.
what sort of riding are you planning on doing? bikeybikey0 -
Mostly XC. Intermediate standard hopefully improving to more technical trails.Live for today, tomorrow you may be married!0

I would say a minimum of 2 inches clearence. Remember smaller frames usually have shorter reach too.

yep, that is the bare minimum if you're going to be trying new stuff - especially anything technical, or it'll be like riding a gate. bikeybikey0

To put it simply, your bike is far too big. Need to change it...
