Gear and brake cables

Hi guys,

I have finally got one of my friends interested in MTB by giving him the use of my saracen Raw 2 2006 (pic below).

After riding The Wall in Afan on Sunday I noticed that some of the gears are slipping when changing.

My friend has offered to pay for new gear & brake cables for the bike so that he can use it again next weekend. The only thing is I want do the work myself but don't really know what I'm looking to buy. We basically want to keep it as cheap as possible because of the obvious quality of the bike.

Any suggestions?

Have a look on ebay for brake and gear cable sets (with outers). Can be very cheap.

Or put a set of flying snakes on and never buy another set again. Simple.

Are flying snakes worth it then? Do I need any particular type of cable or is brake cable just brake cable and gear cable, gear cable?
