Which chainset?

I'm trying to build my dream bike based on a 2006 Lighspeed Pisgah hardtail frame. All the shifters and derailleurs are XTR. Now I'm looking for a nice crankset for it with a 48t big ring. I thought I would go for the XT 48t but I hear the chainrings evaporate and the cranks scuff up and look ugly quickly. It seems the 'Race Face Deus XC 9 Speed X-Type Triple Chainset' is really good but its 44t.
So where would your money go for high performance XC use (with 48t)?

Middleburn, they do upto 48T rings & cranks, very good stuff & UK manufactured too.

My xt isn't scratched, just buy some middleburn rings and flog the xt ones to save yourself a chain/cassette

I second the motion for Middleburn. I recently bought a set of their rings and they were immediately far superior to the rubbish Deore things I previously had. Go for the hardcoat slickshifts. Brilliant.0

If you cycle in thick gloop then be careful of the middleburn hardcoat, mine chainsuck badly in mud. I reckon they are slightly too thick with the hardcoat.

Which bottom bracket would be best to go with a middleburn set up?
How would a middleburn crankset and bb stack up against the XT, XTR, raceface?0 -
You will either need a square taper BB or ISIS. If it was me I would get an SKF ISIS BB. As for a chainset, I would look for a Race Face turbine unit or Next LP, which are still available through places like CRC, best looking chainset around IMO and good chainrings.

Do people agree are middleburn top of the heap for XC cranksets?0

No. I think Shimano make the better crank arms, spider etc but not chainrings. Blackspire worth looking at too for chainrings.

I'd agree based on nothing other than the really cheap set that are fine on the ss and the xt set with middleburn rings on the scott. Shimano for arms/spiders middleburn rings FTUW

Since I can't get a 48t on an XTR the choice seems to be:
XT 48t
or
Race Face Deus XC 9 Speed X-Type
(For both I would put Middleburn Slick shift rings on them).0 -
XT as the x-type bottom brackets wear really quickly.

Middleburn are good, as are RF Deus (i use both).
With regards to BB's, I use square taper on the Middleburns and have had no issue.
RF X-Type BB's get a bad rep, but i haven't had any issues since changng the bearings to Phil Wood (and i ride in muddy, wet Scotland).
Just out of curiosity, why use a 48T big ring? Is it quite flat where you live?Roadie

I use my XC bike for all my riding so I ride a lot on the road. I will always top out on a 44t on the road so I prefer a 48t for speed. I was worried I'd loose power off road but if there is a really steep bit, dropping down to the 36 middle ring provides enough power to scale cliffs .0
