Floating discs, often used in the motor trade on high performance vehicles, help prevent the rotor from warping at high speed, cool quicker and are lighter. But on a mountain bike?! Not needed at all (except maybe if you ride down a 30 mile steep hill with them almost locked on).

A floating disc has two different types of metal so expands differently when hot; in theory this will stop the disc warping. In reality on a mountain bike it won't make much difference, especially to stopping power. However, the floating discs look very nice and if you want to give your bike that bling touch and you have the money then go for it.

As far as I know they are both the same but the 'floating rotor' will not get as hot or cause brake fade as much, as far as I understand it anyway.
Floating rotors have a spider like frame in the middle of the rotor an IIRC only fit to certain types of forks?
Someone here will be able to give you the info you need an the pro's an con's etc. *Cue* Sonic, unless he's beaten me to it?
EDIT: Yep, thought so, nothings changed on here, lol [:p]

Floating disks are lighter than fixed and look better. In theory they give better heavy braking (nobody brakes that hard in reality)

Better wash yourself mate!!!
Floating rotors aren't always lighter either, as there are 2 parts put together with bolts! I's rather suffer with standard rotors personally.... unlike Ninja if it works I don't bother paying the extra for the bling factor ;-)
